Add Disk to RAID 5 OpenManage sits at "Loading Prerequisite Information" when I try to install

I want to add a 1TB disk to the 4-Disk RAID 5 in this server.  I've done it in the past via the RAID controller, but now I read I should add the disk using Openmanage.  The controller shows the new disk as "Foreign".  Not sure how to add to the existing VD in the controller, so I am now attempting to install OpenManage and follow the guidelines to change the disk status and add to the VD.

However, when installing OMSA, it just sits there with the circle spinning saying "Loading Prerequisite Information.  Please Wait".  I'm not fond of simply bypassing this step since it could be useful.

In any case, the bottom line is I would like to add this new disk to the VD either through the Controller BIOS, or through OMSA without having to reload the existing VD data.  My searching online for more information suggests that this is a dangerous process.  ??

Hi,

Which model server and what version of OMSA are you using? You will have to clear the foreign config from the drive before you can add it.

It's a T610 and the OMSA I downloaded is OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-WINX64-8.5.0-2372_A00.

The controller is a PERC H700.  I couldn't see how to clear the foreign config (I thought I bought a NEW drive??) from within the controller BIOS.

In the controller you can go to the foreign view tab and should be able to clear the foreign. Try an older version of OMSA and see if that works, http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=N273Y

I believe in the Foreign tab there was no option available to clear the flag.  I sill see if another version of OMSA will install.

Ah, I found how to clear the foreign flag and now it's ready, but it's included in the RAID1 virtual disk, and not the RAID5 array.  I'm trying to tread carefully here.

I have the OMSA that you linked installed.  It lists the Foreign Disk among the Mirror set boot disks, not with the RAID 5 drives, or alone.  I also don't see an option to clear the foreign disk flag.  The only options I can see are to Blink or Unblink.

Looks like I'm figuring it out.  I should probably have done more reading before posting all of these LOL!

In any case, I think I'm ready to pull the trigger this weekend.  But I wonder what do I do after adding the disk in openmanage?  Do I have to expand the unallocated space in windows?  Does it add automatically?

What are the drive models in the raid 1 and raid 5? It will not expand the Windows partition it will show up as unallocated disk space. Depending on which version of Windows you can either expand natively within Windows or use a third party tool.

The RAID 5 drives are Seagate Constellation ES.

P/N: 9YZ264-15Q

Model: ST1000NM0001

1TB.

The mirrored set drives are ST3300657SS,    6SJ52220      300GB I think.

The server is Windows 2008R2.  I will likely pull the trigger on this during the holiday weekend since fewer people are likely to be here and I'll have more time to recover in the event of that which shall not be mentioned...  ;)
