What color should the ethernet port light up??

Question

I had to reload the OS in a Dimension 2400, and I had a lot of problems getting the system to connect to my routher, just like a lot of others here.   I saw where it was suggested (here) to download a copy of WINSOCK, and that got things working....but.....     Now the Ethernet port lights up orange (or dark yellow) when I plug into it.    I thought it was supposed to light up green.    What do the colors indicate and what can I do to get it correct??

It really depends on exactly which network card you have. On the Broadcom cards, green indicates a connection at 10 Mbps and Amber indicates a connection at 100 Mbps, so it depends on the device you are connecting to.

The computer does have a Broadcom 440X, so I guess that seeing that it's amber that everything is fine.   Thanks

My ethernet connection shows no light at all on the back of my computer and doesn't work. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does this mean my card is bad? Thanks!

It either means it's dead or is not connected to anything that is powered on and provide a connection. Steve

It means that the card is dead if the cable is working properly and is connected to another networking device that is powered on.   Steve
