Using Mac Adress to find product or model

Hello everyone,
I have a list of a hundred mac addresses starting with 34 : 17: EB: and 98:90:96 ... which represent "Dell Inc" ,is it possible to know the model or reference correspendant to the computer (eg Optiplex 9020 ) from the mac address ?

Hello,

I'm not sure that is possible.  The MAC addresses are assigned to the NIC by the manufacturers I believe.  Assuming they assigned the addresses sequentially (which would be a security hazard, so probably not) you might be able to figure out which range of addresses belong to which NIC hardware manufacturer, and then assuming each model is using the same NIC hardware range perhaps correlate that to the try to extrapolate what each model is.  But that would be a lot of guesswork and not very reliable.

I don't believe that the NIC would maintain the information on the make and model of the system it's connected to.  The MAC address is purely physical layer only, not one of the higher ranged communication layers.  You would need some sort of Asset Management tool to gather that information for you, and keep it in a database, such as Dell OpenManage.

I could be wholly wrong, and if so I'm hoping someone will come in and correct me and help you out.  But unfortunately I don't think what you're suggesting is possible.

Todd
