Setting Up a Network

Question

Is it possible to set up a network with two network cards connected to two computers, and a network cable connecting the two network cards? If so, how can we do that?

Not only posssible, but not that difficult. You will looking to create a local Peer to peer network. Check the resources at www.homenethelp.com for some good resources. Post back if you have any additional questions.

Some quick pointers:

Both machines in the same workgroup with static IP addresses.
Use a crossover cable.
Total cost about $30.
Setup this manually away from the wizards.

Start>My Network Places>Add A Network Connection. But this will only work after the NIC's are installed.

But again, if you follow the advice from www.homenethelp.com, you will find this much easier to get it right the first time.

I looked on this page: http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/HomeNet-Win2kXP.asp, and followed the instructions, but couldn't find the NETWORK PROPERTIES. Do you know where I could find it? Also, in the article, it says "Right click on the network connection for your local area network." The only thing that I see in "Network Connections" is MSN Explorer.

Are you NIC cards installed yet?  If not, they msu be installed first in order to do this.  If you right click My Network Places, your adapter(s) should show up there.

The only problem that I have so far is that I can't find the driver for the network card (Ethernet Controller): Adapters WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface. I looked everywhere!

Go to the Device Manager (Right Click My Computer>Properties>Hardware Tab>Device Manager.

If your Adapters are installed properly, they will be listed there. If they are installed but not working, a yellow exclamation mark will be listed next to them.

Well, the Ethernet Control under 'Other Devices'  has a yellow exclamation mark by it.

That's means it is not installed properly, most likely the wrong driver. What NIC is it and what is your OS?

That is not the make or model.  Onboard or PCI Card?  Intel or some other?  Make and model of computer.  This is getting really long for a simple problem.
