Page Cannot Be Displayed Error
Help! I've been having problems with my computer, Dell Dimension 3100. About two mos. ago I started not being able to connect through the internet. I've reset my TCP/IP settings, which worked once...I can ping thru the CMD prompt. I've cleaned it up...I've restored it to it's original settings and nothing still works!!!! Do I now have to resort to paying $99 for technical support? I'm posting this ad at work as I cannot get on the internet at my home. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. My computer is only a year old.

Have you 'Set' ('Add') your gateway address (I can see the Gateway)
If you have hard-coded the DNS server addresses then you might try setting that as well to automatic.

Start | Network Connections
RIGHT-click 'Local Area Connection' | Properties
Find 'Internet Protocol' at the end of the list, click 'Properties'
Under 'General' TAB, both should be 'automatic' and not hard-coded address.
Click 'Advanced' button, then 'Add' for gateway and type the gateway address unless it is already there.
Then Apply/Ok/Save exit from all that and see what you can do with the connection. (Might need to restart the PC).

When you write 'knocking the gateway off' do you mean it causes other computers that are connected to lose internet connection as well? Permanently?
Have you tried shutting down all the systems, powering off the router, powering off the modem and then restarting in sequence (when there is a glitch that stops service)?

On the campus where I provide support, sometimes (not often) I wind up putting in 10.5.1.1 for our (internal) gateway if I am running into a solid wall, not able to get it to work otherwise. If yours now works then other than jotting down notes of what your settings are, you don't need to do anything at all.
Speaking of which, I use a free program (the free version) EverNote.
You can download, save and install it.
To capture a setting, instead of using pencil and paper, just use Alt - PrntScreen (captures the little window into the clipboard) and run EverNote, click the down arrow if you need to open up space for the (first or) next note, then RIGHT-click and choose 'Paste'
You can stamp the note as being of a certain type. When you exit 'x' it saves automatically. What I like is there is a perpetual timeline and every note is given an exact day and time stamp as to when it was created. I use it to document every little thing I do to each of more than a hundered computers that I support here.
