modem on hold (result code 53 driver installation failed)
I have one phone line that is used for my computer and my telephone, when I am connected on the internet I used to be able to get incoming phone calls, but now I am not receiving any. The modem on hold is enabled, but it is not working correctly. The modem helper cd says it is a result code 53 driver installation failed and that there is something wrong with my software, but the cd won't fix the software problem. If anyone has any idea how to fix this problem I would be extremely greatful. If you could tell me where I can find the software to put it back on my computer or where I can buy it that would be great!

This problem doesn't seem to appear on any Latitude forum, so I’m piggybacking my situation on what appears to be the most recent tread regarding Result Code 53.
After noticing that I was unable to connect to the internet, I ran Modem Helper and got the following result, "A Dell Tech should be consulted to help resolve this problem-Result Code 53, driver installation failed." After reading a number of forum threads, this is what I did.
My initial attempt at solving this problem was to delete every existence of my PCTEL 2304 WT v.92 MDC Modem from my Latitude C840, which is running Windows XP Professional. Under Control Panel-Phone and Modem Options, the modem was listed but labeled "not functional." In Device Manager, the modem had the dreaded exclamation point (!). When viewing the properties screen, there was a Code 10 designation. I did the right-click, uninstall thing. In Control Panel-And or Remove Programs, I removed all the appropriate modem software. After rebooting, the "found new hardware" balloon appeared, followed by a Found New Hardware Wizard that stated, "There was a problem installing this hardware. This device cannot start (Code 10)."
At this point, I believed that the problem was hardware, not software related, though I did download and attempt to install the most current driver from the Dell Download site. To be on the safe side, I did this.
I used System Restore to place my system at a state prior to my recognition of the problem (7/31/04). During the System Restore process, the following message appeared, "Ox77f82fe3...referenced memory at Oxc0000118...memory could not be read." From this point, I suspected that System Restore would not solve my problem, which it did not. I reversed System Restore.
What I can’t understand is why the modem, which appears to be the problem, went bad. I NEVER mishandle my notebook (drops, bumps, etc.). I also don’t recall any lighting strikes. Well, I can’t recall one, since the notebook shares a telephone access point with a working answering machine that is functioning fine.
Before I go with a hardware replacement, are there any other theories and/or solutions my fellow Dellforumers can offer?
