Darn! I really thought that would fix it. Consider completely removing Norton - Since it is always difficult to completely uninstall it, go to the Symantec website which has instructions for the complete removal. If this fixes the problem you can reinstall Norton and see if it still works.
Otherwise, you can also look at the results of the following Google search (where I found the article above). I'm at work right now and don't have a lot of time to spend going over those search results, but you might want to get started.
Steve, I removed norton internet security using the recommended tool on the norton website and checked ipconfig it was the same(169.154.x.x).
So, using running the command prompt as administrator below are the results -
(A) ipconfig/release results in cmd: "An error occurred while releasing interface local area (please read wireless network in case of wireless) connection: An address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint." (B) ipconfig/renew results in cmd: "An error occurred while renewing interface local area (please read wireless network in case of wireless) connection: The support for the specified socket type does not exist in this address family."
Google didn'et help me except giving the system srror codes for the errors mentioned in (A) & (B) in my previous reply:
For (A) ipconfig/release results in cmd: "An error occurred while releasing interface local area (please read wireless network in case of wireless) connection: An address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint."
THE SYSTEM ERROR CODE IS: 1228
For (B) ipconfig/renew results in cmd: "An error occurred while renewing interface local area (please read wireless network in case of wireless) connection: The support for the specified socket type does not exist in this address family."
I tried to find answers/resolutions on microsoft support site for those error codes but of no help, unfortunately.
(1). whether re-installing vista will help resolve this issue? Should I download latest network driver from intel site etc to get it working?
(2). Can you/someone let me know is there any cheapest store/source available locally (I live in northwest burbs of chicago, zip 60016) who can resolve this issue?
I appreciate your patience and assistance, Steve. But, I'm really tired of this problem. Its so stubborn! Please answer my questions on 1 & 2 above. Many thanks,
Niether of those error codes help me to figure out what is going on except to tell me again that your winsock settings are corrupt. You can't ping an outside address, because you don't have an IP address and thus the even if the ping request is being sent, the computer returning the ping would not know where to send it. So the ping command does not help solve this problem.
It's worth a shot reinstalling the Network drivers. To do this, first go to the following site on a computer with a working internet connection and download the latest drivers for the network card:
Somehow move this file to the E1505. Next boot into Safe Mode, go into Device Manager, expand the listing for Network Adapters, select your ethernet network adapter and uninstall it. Reboot into Normal Mode, cancel the New Hardware Wizard, if it starts, then run the downloaded file to reinstall the network drivers. Let us know if that fixes it (I don't think it will, but what I think may not have anything to do with reality).
The utimate solution may be to reinstall Windows (in which case you should back up all of your personal data before doing so). If your system has PC -Restore you can use that to restore your computer to its original factory shipped condition in a matter of minutes, but you will lose anything you have added since the original shipment.
Sorry, I cannot recommend a store/business to take it to for repair (I always fix things myself so I have no experience with repair shops). But, I think that whoever you took it to would probably just reinstall Windows or use PC-Restore, because this problem looks like it would take a long time to solve as it would require major registry surgery.

Kane,
See if this Microsoft article helps:

(1) I used the tcp/ip v4 when the step in the link (http://slees.net/2006/09/25/ip-169254xx/) asks to choose tcp/ip in the properties of local area connection.
(2) Has it something to do with the network drivers consdering the system responses in (A) & (B) above?
I feel we are nearing the solution. Please help.

Steve,

THE SYSTEM ERROR CODE IS: 10044
I found those system error codes at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/
I tried to find answers/resolutions on microsoft support site for those error codes but of no help, unfortunately.

Also, when I ping 64.233.187.99 ( as I read about it somewhere in thr forum) it gives error code 1231 (ping: transmit failed, error code 1231.)
Is this of any help?
