I cant have internet on my 2 computers using my DLink Router

Basic Details:
- I'm using a local DSL internet which is a PPPoE type of internet..
- DSL Modem is Zyxel 600 Series
- Im using a DLink Router DI-604
- I have two computers (Computer A & B)
- I purchased a new ethernet cable with straight crimp configuration

Scenario:
- DLink Router already contains PLDT PPPoE DSL Settings -> username
and password, dhcp enabled.
- DSL Modem is connected to DLink router using the bundled blue
ethernet cable..
- Computer A connected to DLink and has internet using old ethernet cable..
- Computer B does not have internet using new ethernet cable..
- I formatted Computer B, now contains just basic windows.. all
drivers ok, including ethernet adapter..
- I connected Computer B with new ethernet cable once more to DLink
router, still does not have internet..
- I used Computer A's ethernet cable (old) in Computer B connection
Router.. now Has internet!!!.. (must be the new cable.. right?)
- I used then this new cable in connecting Computer A to DLInk
router.. still has internet!!! (so, is it still the new cable?..
weird..)

- I connected Computer B directly to DSL modem using old cable, has internet..
- I connected Computer B directly to DSL modem using new cable, does
not have internet..

- Just to be sure, I connected computer A to Router, and also to
Modem using new cable, still has internet in both connections..

Questions:
- Is there a chance that router settings are just setup to have only
one computer connection?
- Is another configuration (Cross) needed for the new cable to work
if it will be connected to DLink router with multiple computers
hooked up?
- How can I correct this?

What I want:
- I want to use two computers hooked up in DLink Router DI-604,
connected to ZyXel DSL Modem with PPPoE internet connection..


Please help..

You do not need a cross over cable... One thing I'm un-clear about, Comp. A had new cable and internet worked, Comp. B had old cable and internet worked. Was this at the same time?

If not, check the IP address of each PC when connected, they should not be the same. (DHCP Lease time) - check router configs.

I'm a network tech for a national communications company and have had cables that work on one device but not another, it doesn't happen often but it does happen.

I believe you're using 2 different kinds of Ethernet cables, I'm thinking one is Cross-Over and the other is Straight-Through.

With that being said, that's your problem.

Routers are smart, but not that smart.

You need to use 1 type of Ethernet cable when connecting to the router it can't manage 2 types of cable.

I've always used Cross-Over cable, I never use Straight-Through.

The reason your computer doesnt work when you use the Straight-Through connecting directly to the modem itself, it needs a Cross-Over cable.


And I'm going to add my own $0.02


Get rid of the D-Link garbage and get Linksys.

Yea, I know, Linksys is a little more pricey, but I've NEVER had a problem with my Linksys setup.

The DI-604, like most consumer type router's has a built in 4 port switch... It does NOT require a cross over cable from a switch to a PC. Cross over is required when connecting  a DCE device to another DCE device or a DTE device to a DTE device but not when connecting a DCE to a DTE device.

On comercial routers, such as Cisco... it would require a cross over cable to a PC. This is because a Cisco does not have a built in switch. However, if a Switch blade is installed into the router, a straght cable is used.

Bottom line... switch to PC = straight cable.

P.S. Many newer consumer routers / switch's / hub's will accept both straight and cross over cables. Just don't use both on the same router/switch.

To check your cables, hold both ends side by side with the tab down, Pin 1 is on the left. Color code will be the same on both ends for a straight cable.
