ERROR Resource Conflict - PCI Network Controller (pls help)
can't connect to the internet via SpeedStream 4100 Ethernet ADSL modem
ERROR message at Start Up Resource Conflict - PCI Network Controller
(press Escape to resume or Del for Setup)
In Device Manager there is either a yellow ! or a red X (depending) next to
3COM Etherlink 10/100 PCI for Complete PC Management NIC (3C905-TX) (0001)
Status box says network adapter is not working properly, may not have all the drivers...may need to be set up again...see Network Troubleshooter in Windows Help
I've downloaded the current drivers from the Dell website and the 3COM website, uninstalled and re-installed following the directions and still get the same Start Up error and unable to connect to the internet.
I feel the ethernet adapter is still working because the lights are lit correctly (2 for 10/100 ea). The 3 lights (Power, Ethernet, DSL) on my modem are lit and AT&T/SBC Yahoo says its not on their end. Spent a long time on the phone going through everything to have tech say its the drivers for network adapter (which I had discovered before calling them in an effort to rule out everything)
The only thing that happened prior to this situation was a careless tug of the dsl cable while cleaning which in turn pulled the power cord out of the modem. In my clumsy attempt to fix the modem and its cords I inadvertantly unplugged, plugged, turned off and on and off and on...
When I was finished cleaning and returned to my computer, it was unresponsive to keyboard or mouse. When I first re-started it, the Start-Up error said that the keyboard wasn't present (oops I guess I must have pulled that cord a little too). I re-set that cable and the rest of them before starting it back up. The 2nd time I re-started it is when the Start-Up Error (Resource Conflict - PCI network controller) began along with inability to connect to internet...
I'm up to date on AVG Free Anti-Virus (vers. 7.1.385) definitions and scans, Ad-Aware SE Personal (build 1.06r1) definitions and scans, Spybot Search and Destroy (1.3) definitions and scans, and MS Windows updates.
I'm at a loss here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Windows 98 has a limit as to how many entries can work in the networking list, so I would identify ANY entry in that list you can do without and Remove it (before re-booting), including the network adapater itself. I don't know about the ADSL (not familiar) however in our LAN environment, once we have network adapater set (with no resource conflict mark) we also have to include settings for TCP/IP and (for us) NETBEUI (make it the default) as well as, sometimes, file and print sharing.
The Windows 98 steps are quite involved and sometimes I struggle and struggle before finally hitting on the right combination. If you do not get it to work with these suggestions then knowing exactly which steps you have taken (up to that point, the most recent attempt(s) ) could be helpful.

thank you so much for your reply
honestly after a week of non-stop troubleshooting, installing, uninstalling and re-installing these drivers and other versions I found between Dell and 3COM website, I gave up
I went and bought a USB adapter for my ethernet cable & bypassed my NIC. At some point I am going to go back and try to figure this thing out. I'm sure your suggestions will be helpful then. Until then, I appreciate your help and will re-post my results if there are any
