error 608 message when trying...

...to connect to netscape.  I have a dialup and am running XP.  This all happened after having "restored" my operating system.

I thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

error 608 means that the device or the modem does not exist. simply means that the operating system does not recognize your modem, dude. have you checked the device manager for bangs, yellow question marks, or red marks? it might be possible that after "restoring" your OS, the driver for the modem had been corrupted.

what you can do is to check the device manager first. if you see the modem there, check for yellow question marks, bangs or red x marks beside it. if its under other devices, you have to install the driver. if the modem is not under Other Devices but has a bang (!) or a red (x) mark, try removing it from the device manager, restart the computer and reinstall the driver.

it could also be a hardware problem. nevertheless, try reinstalling the modem driver first before assuming that its a hardware failure.
