Drivers missing and more

I was forced to reinstall the OS on my Dell DIM 9150 (dual core, 250GB SATA
HD) with XP PRO (it came with XP Home installed). The reason was that I had a
persistant malware that messed up my internet security which I just couldn't
eliminate. My university has a MS site license so  XP PRO was available
gratis. With the DELL factory set up the install procedure failed to see the SATA.
In SETUP under DRIVES there are: DISKETTE DRIVE, DRIVE 0: SATA- 0, DRIVE 1:
SATA- 1, DRIVE 2: SATA- 2, DRIVE 3: SATA- 3, DRIVE 4: PATA- 0, DRIVE 5: PATA-
1, SATA OPERATION. In this last category there are 4 options: RAID Auotdetect
/AHCI, RAID Autodetect /ATA, RAID ON, Combination = SATA/PATA combinatin
mode. THe factory setting was RAID Auotdetect /AHCI. A colleague (allegedly
more knowledgeable) suggested that that I select the SATA/PATA combination
mode and switch back after installation was complete. I did so, but found
that the new OS would not boot after this change back . So back to the setup with
SATA OPERATION set for SATA/PATA comb. I attempted to reinstall my
operational software. Unfortunately the system refused to recognize my
internet adapter and, moreover, all of the OTHER DEVICES (PCI DEVICE,
Parallel, Serial Ports, etc.) showed YELLOW ? marks in DEVICE MANAGER
indicating that no drivers had been assigned. Well  I spent almost an entire
day trying to get the system to find the new hardware (Network adapter) and
to find drivers but nothing seems to work.
Starting over I reinstalled the XP-Home OS with Dell's disk, which would proceed only with the setting in the SATA/PATA comb position and on startup I get a message saying that SATA Drive 2 is unrecognized, press F1 to continue, afterwhich XP-Home did come up. However the same problem persists, that is, no drivers are loaded for the internet adapter or the other devices.....I am at a standstill until I get these items working.....I apologize for this sad long winded tale, but I do need some help and advice from the DELL experts....Thanks.....Cincidave

Please do. I am at my wits end. I did manage to do the grading of finals and I am due in DC for an NSF panel on Monday so I must leave tomorrow with this mess still hanging. If anyone has some suggestions, I'd be most appreciative I will be back around the end of next week.

I also just discovered that the MS backup software did not load. I searched both disks  (HOME and Pro) but it is not installed though it should be in the Assessories-Tools menu. ...Not there. any suggestions about that item would also be appreciated. It is in my satellite system but where is the program? I would download and insert it in the 9150 if I could find it ....Help here needed, too!

Thanks for your help NemesisDB...I only wish it could've fixed the problem(s).....CimciDave

Nancy,
A cogent thought but unfortunately I cannot get on the internet so they would not be able to operate this system. I am communicating from a satellite....CinciDave

Why not just call the Dell people and pay them to get in your computer and fix it over the phone?  Well worth the $100 or so it costs especially if you are techno impaired.

One can post to this forum and not be online?
I'm worse off in the technical dept. than I initially thought.

Nancy,
I use another computer which is part of a network that is viable. My 9150 is not able to access the network for obvious reasons. I'm sure you are very savvy technically speaking, I just think I didn't explain my situation very carefully. I hope this helps. I should add that I am not exactly uneducated with respect to computation, but this problem has me thoroughly buffaloed....CinciDave

Hopefully your driver problem is resolved.  If it isn't, Dell can still access the computer through AOL--you will have to install AOL from a CD but dial up is free with AOL--then you could get on the internet and Dell could get to it.  Takes forever to download what they send but they sure fixed my computer in about 10 minutes after I tried for a week.   Isn't much help but ......  Darn the period key just came off my laptop
