Can't get online!!!
Hello,
I have a Dell Dimension 8200. I have never had a problem getting online ( was with AOL several years, dialup, then switched to their braodband ). Last summer I switched to Comcast Cable and no problems. Then in November ( just over night ) I couldn't get online ( cannot find page ). I contacted comcast and we went through the whole thing( power down modem, check all settings ) and everything was fine on their end. Still can't get on. Then they suggested I remove Norton and shut off Firewall, still no luck. Then they said maybe it's the cable ( eithernet ). I switched to my laptop and I got online. So it's not the cable. I have been using my laptop ever since. One bit of info that might help someone out there, when I spoke to the comcast people they had me look at the IP address and they said that the numbers( I think it was a 669 number, not sure) indicated that the computer didn't recognize that there was a modem.
Any help and direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
-Paul

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the info. I just tried it and it WORKS!!!!!!!! All those other people ( "experts" ) tried to tell me everything from buying a new PCI card to stripping my computer and reloading it. I can't say thanks enough. I really appreciate this because I never intended my laptop to be the main online computer because of all the photography work I do on it. Thanks again Steve.

ironduke,
If you can't get online, you can't get to this forum to read messages - duh! Thus, you must have a computer onto which you can download the file, copy to removable media, carry it to the broken computer, copy it onto the hard drive of that computer, and run it from there.

Alright, then start your own thread with a new topic (note that this thread has solved the problem of the original poster and you just jumped in and asked how to get winsockfix downloaded to your computer). Please describe the problem you having in detail, explain how you connect to the internet (cable/dsl/dialup/ through a router/ wired or wireless, etc.), which model computer, which model network adapters, and exactly what happens when you try to connect.
