Unable to Dell N1548P Master Switch via Serial Port.

Hello Community,

I've configured three Dell N1548P switches in a stack and I'm attempting to access the master switch via its serial port using PuTTY. However, despite using the correct settings from the switch manual, I'm unable to connect.

Here's what happens:

  • I connect the switch's serial port to my laptop using a USB-to-serial adapter.
  • The laptop recognizes the adapter in Device Manager.

  • I configure PuTTY with the specified serial port, baud rate (9600), and other settings from the manual.

  • When I click "Open" in PuTTY, a connection window appears, but nothing happens.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  1. Initial Testing:

    • Pressed Enter and waited for several minutes without receiving any response.
  2. Cable Verification:

    • Tested with a different cable, though this should not be an issue since the same cable successfully connects to non-stacked switches.
  3. Baud Rate Adjustments:

    • Experimented with various baud rates (115200, 57600, 38400, 19200, 9600, 4800, 2400, and 1200). Notably, setting the baud rate to 1200 caused the switch to hang. Please avoid using 1200 baud if the switch is configured for 9600 baud.

While it seems like the serial cable is establishing a connection, something is preventing the switch from responding.

I'm out of ideas. Any assistance in diagnosing and resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello thanks for choosing Dell and welcome to our community.

Flow control must be none as you can see from the attached. (click on the dropdown for the options)
If the issue persists, make sure the firmware is up-to-date: sometime rebooting is required to fix serial port display output issues.

Respectfully,

@DELL-Young E Sorry, I forgot to mention that I also tried setting the flow control value to 'None', but it didn't resolve the issue. I haven't yet tried connecting after rebooting the stack. I plan to test the connection after business hours and will update you on the results.
