PowerConnect 3424P firmware upgrade problem
I bought a 3424P recently and tried to upgrade the firmware. I dont remember the version of the old firmware, but it was pretty old. I read about how I was supposed to upgrade both the firmware and the program version at the same time or Id end up in an endless reboot loop, and I thought I had done it correctly using tftp, but apparently not. Now I am stuck in the endless loop. When I start the switch I have the software version 2.0.0.31 running with boot version 1.0.1.01 Built 15-Jun-2006 and hardware version 00.00.02 .
So I tried to follow the instructions on how to recover from this, andI have tried using XMODEM to send the older software version to get out of this loop, but it wont work. The download proceeds as planned, but I get an error about decompressing the file. Ive tried several different software versions without any success. I need some help on what to do next.
These filese are big and it takes a long time to send them over. I increased the baud rate to 115200 to make it go faster...does this have anything to do wih my failure?

I also did try erasing the flash file config as well without success.

I tried today to send the .ros file at 9600 baud with similar errors.
I guess the baud rate didnt have much to do with it.

The only chance to recover is to do Erase Flash Sector inside the Advance Menu
In the boot menu press simultaneus CTRL-Shift-6 then press Enter
Startup Menu
[1] Download Software
[2] Erase Flash File
[3] Password Recovery Procedure
[4] Enter Diagnostic Mode
[5] Set Terminal Baud-Rate

Select option# 7 for advance menu to get the advance options.

[3] Image menu

Select option# 2 to erase flash sectors
This what you will see

After it erase the sector go ahead and upload the firmware or ROS file using XModem from the startup menu.
use baud rate of 38400. Use firmware version 2.0.0.31 (PowerConnect_34xx-20031.ros) to match boot-code version 1.0.1.01.

Hans,
This is actually prsmith777...Dell locked me out of my account for 24 hours for too many bad sign on attempts...so I created this account
I thank you for your instructions, and I followed them exactly...but the results are the same. I tried various baud rates and tried reloading the .ros file thinking maybe it was corrupted, but no luck.
This is an out of warranty switch purchased from a reseller and Id really like to try my hardest to correct the issue before paying for repair/tech support..
Are there any other ideas to try? Is it possible the boot version is not correct and thus the .ros file is not compatible? I didnt really want to try that unless it is a viable solution given the long time to xmodem the file to the switch.

PRSMITH,
I do not belive the boot-code 1.0.1.01 is a problem because we are still able to get to the boot menu.
All firmware 2.0.x.x.ROS will be compatible to boot-code 1.0.1.01.
If you had done "Erase Flash Sectors" not "Erase Flash File" and did XModem the ROS file correctly then maybe this switch is host.
Maybe give it one last shot and download the file from the ftp sites:

I tried it and the same problem.
I am going to try the other firmware versions and see what happens
there are:
2.0.0.20
2.0.0.21
2.0.0.29
2.0.0.30
which are supposed to work with boot 1.0.1.01
Wish me luck

same problem , i've uploaded 2.0.0.20 by xmodem and just played on "set data breakpoint" and disable watchdog in the secret menu .
I can post the error , end in the diagnostic mode too.
Can be nice to get the password to play mooore ... :D
Someone have the same problem on a linksys stuff , developed like this equipment on cisco engineering ( I think :-/ )
I'd like someone in dell engineering can answear us for this SOFTWARE issue.
All other test in the diag mode are ok.

no , i haven't got any answear.
There are more hardware , and not only manufactured by dell ( ... ) affected .
I read somewhere that solving this issue was beginning to cost more than platform development but this is a rumour.

I am having a similar issue. I was able to pull back older image by choosing option 11 on boot menu, but I still can't get newer firmware to load after downloading and trying several different versions.
11 - Activate Backup Image
