Feature Request for OpenManage Switch Administration
Hi All,
I'm using the PowerConnect series for some time. I have 4 units of 2724 and 2 units of 3424.
From that you can tell that I have a busy networking environment.
What would help me work it faster and better?
Some minor enhancements to the OpenManage software would be great.
Looking at the OpenManage that I have for the PowerConnect 3424:
OpenManage
Copyright © Dell
All Rights Reserved
Version 2.21
Build No. 3.04
In the first page that loads up: http://a.b.c.d/config/folder_system.htm You see a colorful looks of the face of the switch with Green and Blue interface numbers letting you know the interface is either ON or Off.
What a waste!
Why a waste?
Because the ON/OFF is great, but is missing lots of great information on that page.
Why not load on the same page some meaningful information that will enhnace my use and reduce my overhead?
There is so much white space below it, kinda makes you wonder why not populate it with key information:
What information?
Interaface information:
1. First of All, BREAK the single color per interace to 'Two LEDs color' so it will mimic the actual interface.
Instead of having just a single color of the Blue/Green interface, change it so it shows TWO colors per interface.
That will enable us to see how the interface is looking in REAL world. It doesn't take much to make it and it is certainly not a hardship on the graphics.
What is the benefit of this?
Is my port set up as 10Mbit or 100Mbit? or 1000Mbit?
Black/Black - it is down
Orange/Orange - it is set at 10Mbit
Green/Orange - it is set at 100Mbit
Green/Green - it is set at 1000Mbit
You have that information in the Port Type at each interface specific menu. So why not put it to use?
Why do I have to click on the interface to figure this out? in a single diagram that YOU ALREADY HAVE, you can just make it faster to see in a glance, with no need to travel throuhg all the interfaces to learn them.
2. Below the Switch Diagram, why not add some meaningful information to tell me something about the interfaces:
You have Description (0-64 Characters), why not show it in a table under the diagram?
Why do I have to guess where is the interface for "Joe's port number" .
Today, I have to travel through each one of the ports to find out which it is.
You already have it at each interface specific men. So why not put it to use?
Show a table with the port number and the Description. You could even add the Port Type to make it clearer if you want, with FD/HD values.
3. Hey you put a great feature called Description (0-64 Characters) in each inteface menu.
Why not give it a 64 Chars space? The Textbox that allows you to enter that value is only showing you 13 chars. Doesn't that seem silly? you have enough space to show 150 chars, and you are giving me only 13 chars?
Does anyone read this suggestion?
Where can I send this feature request / bug reporting to Dell?
Is there a suggestion box? Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
-Alon.

No response at all from Dell admins?
