U4919DW, MacBook Pro, USB Type-C no signal

Hi,

I cannot connect my Dell U4919DW via USB Type-C from my MacBook Pro 16". It says "no signal". Does anybody what the problem is?

As a follow up to whom it may concern: the USB C cable apple ships with the MBP is not capable of transmitting video signal. Apple does not provide an USB C cable that is capable of transmitting video signal. Hence, use the USB C cable that comes with the monitor from Dell. Unfortunately it's a bit short but it transmits video and power perfectly so you only have one cable on your desk.

An Apple Thunderbolt USC C cord is available too. It’s also short but transmits video and power.  Connecting directly to your monitor and MBP, you can eliminate an additional video cord (ex hdmi) and the regular power cord to your MBP. Thunderbolt cords are kept short due to data transfer abilities i believe. They are also $$.

@blazey234  You can try this cable if you want.  It supports up to 100W PD, and video, and USB 3.x Gen 1 (5 Gbps).  It won't support USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), but I don't think the display does either, and the only 3.1 Gen 2 cables I've seen are 3 feet long except for one "active" cable made by Cable Matters that's 10 feet long, but that one only supports up to 60W PD, which might reduce your battery charging speed and/or performance since the 16" MBP is designed for a 96W power source.

Thx. The cable that comes with the monitor works well for me as I place the MBP right next to the screen anyway, resting on a laptop stand. So I learnt I don’t need a longer cable in practice. It is even an advantage now as I have less unused cable on the desk.

With this set up I have only one cable on the desk from the MBP to the monitor that sends all signals including power. The cable is connected to a MagSafe adapter so I can easily plug the MBP to the monitor. I’m doing the same for the card reader, so I have two MagSafe adapters permanently attached to the MBP. Mouse goes directly via Bluetooth, keyboard with dongle goes to the monitor USB port. Never had a cleaner set up.
