U3419W, how to use upstream/downstream ports?

I have a Dell desktop and a Surface laptop that I connect to my Dell Monitor.  I want to use the upstream and downstream ports but am trying to figure out if I need to connect each computer with two cables, or if I just need to connect each computer to the upstream ports?

In the Dell Display Manager, it seems like you need two cables per computer, but it doesn't seem like I have the right cables or ports to make that happen.

I use the HDMI-1 port for my desktop and the DisplayPort connector to my Surface (through a Surface hub).  I can use the KVM switch to switch between computers, which is great, but I would love to also be able to only use one mouse and keyboard with this setup.  Currently, I have to switch keyboards and mice to make it work.  This setup did work for a short period after I first set it up, but then it stopped.

Also, when my laptop is connected to the display, the monitor periodically blacks out and then returns.  I updated all the firmware and drivers on my Surface laptop, but that does not eliminate this behavior.  I do not have that experience when the monitor is connected to my desktop.

Can you please provide some help here?  Thanks so much!

Upstream connection will work with one device.  What you need is a docking station.

Desktop/laptop =>  switch =>  docking station =>  monitor, mouse, keyboard, peripherals.

@Chino de Oro

The KVM switch is part of the monitor, the Dell U3419W.  There are two upstream ports on it, as well as 4 downstream ports.  In addition to connecting the monitor to each machine, do you also have to connect both upstream ports?

Thanks!

For built-in KVM monitor, you will need to connect each computer to each upstream port #7.  You can then connect peripherals, mouse, keyboard, to downstream ports #8.  See pictures below.  During operation, use the monitor's OSD to select the input computer as well as the KVM switch to corresponding machine.

Refer to Dell U3419W monitor user's guide for ports information and connection guide.

Yes, I did see that in the manual.  What I am trying to figure out is whether it is enough to connect each computer to those upstream ports?  Or whether I also need to connect each computer using ports 3-1, 3-2, 4 or 5 as well?

In the Dell Display Manager, it seems like you need two cables per computer, but it doesn't seem like I have the right cables to make that happen.  I only have one of the cables that connects to 7-1/7-2.

Does that make sense?  Does each computer connect to the monitor with one cable (7-1/7-2) or two cables?

Thanks!

Obviously you must connect one video cable from each computer to the corresponding monitor's video input ports.
