Secondary monitors displaying in the wrong aspect ratio
Hi there,
Wondering if anyone could help me with an issue I'm having with my new work from home setup. I have two Dell E1916He monitors that I have connected via DisplayPort to a Dell D6000 docking station; I then use this docking station for both my work laptop and my personal laptop.
The problem is that when connecting the monitors I'm only given the option for display resolutions with an aspect ratio of 5:4 (e.g 1280x1024), rather than the anything that actually fits the 16:9 dimensions of the monitors themselves (e.g 1366x768). This is the case when going into the display settings for both computers. I've also tried going into the "list all modes" window in the advanced display settings in both computers. I've also tried going into the graphics settings of both computers (both use Intel processors), but when I click "detect" in the "multiple displays" tab of the Intel graphics control panel, neither laptop is able to detect any other displays.
Lastly, I tried updating the drivers for the two monitors and for the docking station. This didn't make any difference.
I think the problem is something to do with either the D6000 docking station or the DisplayPort cables; I've ruled out the laptops since it would be odd for the same issue to appear on both, and I've ruled out the monitors because I can plug them individually into either laptop using a VGA cable and a VGA to HDMI adaptor without any problem. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this issue?

@_bort_ The reason you're not seeing the displays in Intel HD Graphics Control Panel is because the D6000, like all Dell Dxxxx series docks, uses "indirect display" technology called DisplayLink for video -- not to be confused with DisplayPort. DisplayLink does not rely on a native GPU output. And although it has some advantages in some narrow use cases, it does some with several drawbacks that can be significant in some use cases, which I've written about in the post marked in the answer in this thread. But even if none of that is a potential concern to you, if you haven't already I would update the D6000 firmware, which you can find here, and then install the latest version of the DisplayLink drivers directly from DisplayLink.com. If those steps don't solve the issue, I'm not sure what to suggest. This may or may not be relevant, but this is the lowest resolution display I've ever seen somebody try to use with the D6000, so ironically maybe there are potential issues running at the low end of the spectrum rather than just the high end. You might want to consider posting over on the DisplayLink.com forums, since the D6000 is essentially just packaging their technology here.
