Internal display choppy, lagging, while external monitor just works fine

Issue apparent on all the distros I've tried. Ubuntu, Opensuse tumbleweed, Fedora.

nomodeset = poor performance but usable laptop display

default kernel options = choppy laptop display (unusable, less than 1 fps), external displays working fine. Shows that i915 is being utilized.

What can I try to do to fix that?
dell 7620 (13700H, only integrated gpu, 40 GB)

It works fine on windows
