Feedback on Ubuntu 13.10

Hi,

Has someone already tried to update to the 13.10 version ? I already tested some mainline kernels, and plan to try anyway. I just wanted to have some feedback though.

Thanks !

Hello Autra,

Just upgraded my second editions Dell XPS 13 Project Sputnik (1080P display) from 13.04 to 13.10. Only perceivable issues are with the sound. There are a few methods to remedy the situation so don't let that hold you from upgrading! Everything else about the system seems to have improved response times, from app loading, to shutdown and boot up times. If you do upgrade and find yourself with the sound not working, don't fret. First and foremost, open a terminal and type the following: "sudo alsa force-reload" and reboot your computer once the terminal is finished. You may not find that it fixed the issue immediately. If this is the case, click on system settings, sound, and under the "output" tab you should see two options. Select "Headphones / Built in audio". This should get your sound working again until a permanent fix has been found. Hope this works for you!

I've been running 13.10 on a FHD XPS 13 to keep an eye out for bugs. My install is upgraded from 13.04. I didn't have any problems with sound on my unit. The only problem I had was with video on a pre-release version of the 13.10 installer, but I believe that issue to be fixed in the final 13.10 install media.

Actually, my only complaint is non-XPS 13 specific. I use the Awesome WM in a GNOME session, and gnome-fallback's gnome-setttings-daemon no longer manages the media keys thanks to GNOME Shell taking that over. From what I've read, this is new with GNOME 3.8 and a result of GNOME becoming more monolithic (supposedly in preparation for Wayland?). I'm using GNOME Shell until I have time to configure my custom GNOME/Awesome session to handle media keys.

Even the backlight issue that appeared in 12.10 is solved and working in 13.10, that's very nice to have that control back. I recommend upgrading.

So I upgraded as well. Did not have any problem whatsoever... Even the sound is working like a charm. Backlight is working, but that's normal as it has been so since kernel 3.8.something.

The battery life seems longer with 13.10 as well. Do you guys have noticed that?

I kept 12.04 until a few weeks ago when I finally upgraded through to to 13.10. The only issue I have is it's no longer detecting a battery, so I don't  get a battery indicator (state, charge/discharge remaining percentage/time) or power settings for the battery.  Suspend is working ok when the lid is closed. Is anyone else having that issue? Or any ideas how to resolve?

I am seeing the battery detected in dmesg:

[    0.970096] ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT0] (battery present)

But no battery under /proc/acpi:

$ ls /proc/acpi/
button event wakeup

I just bought a FHD XPS13 and I'm evaluating what version of Ubuntu to install. I'm surprised to hear you got no issues with 13.10 as I get an annoying flickering screen as soon as it boots up. I just downloaded it from here http://releases.ubuntu.com/saucy/. I read on some other forum that this issue could be solved by upgrading the kernel. However, it's quite difficult to do that when your screen keeps on flickering.

Did you do anything in particular or encountered such a problem?

I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10, and was frustrated for about a day because Ubuntu reverted to software rendering. I eventually figured out that GRUB was going to the 3.5 kernel rather than the 3.11 one, and when I fixed that, things were good again. See my AskUbuntu answer on this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/361002/very-slow-system-after-installing-13-10/417075#417075
