My keyboard layout always keeps on changing.

Hi there, i am a user of a Dell Latitude E5430. Normally I keep the keyboard input language/layout to English (US) , because when it's in English (UK) the keyboard produces incorrect symbols, for example when I press  the quotation mark symbol(") it produces the (@) symbol and so on. So although I keep it to English (US) , it changes back to English (UK) after waking the laptop  from sleep mode or not using it for few minutes. So I have to change it always from the taskbar and that's a trouble changing it every 15-20 minutes.Annotation 2020-07-24 084921.png

Above is a screen snip from where I always have to change the keyboard input language/layout. Anybody's got a solution?

Best Regards,
Tyeberg.

I have exactly the same problem! The machine just keeps on switching back to some default keyboard setting every 20 minutes. And I'm a novelist - can you imagine the nightmare?

Anyone from Dell technical on who can help fix this issue?

The keyboard layout of the device is also controlled by the region of operation. Where do you reside? If you reside in a country that has language different than the one you use while operating the laptop then you will have to shut off the location setting. And change the region to the type that supports the language setting on your laptop.

Same problem here ... I thought it was because the keyboard layout was showing on my taskbar and maybe I was accidentally hitting the button, so I made it not show. But just now I'm typing along and it'd changed again. The only way I could get back to it (because I couldn't TYPE anything into search) was to go back into settings and make it show on the taskbar again.

I have to say, between Windows 10 and this awful Dell laptop, I'm about to throw it in a river.

Hi @000000000000000000  and @Danieldekock

I tried this way and it has helped till now. The keyboard layout hasn't changed till now. Try the below method.

Right click your Start Button, choose Powershell (admin)

Paste this commend into Powershell and hit Enter:

$1 = New-WinUserLanguageList en-US

Then, Paste this commend into Powershell and hit Enter:

Set-WinUserLanguageList $1

Close Powershell and restart your PC

That's It!
Good luck solving your issue,
Tyeberg.

Hi

I have the opposite problem (I need it set to uk and it keeps changing to US)

What difference would there be in the command other than substituting US for UK?

Would it work on command prompt if i don't have powershell?

@JosephOc
HI, Sorry for the delayed reply, I would greatly like to help you, as I myself am a fellow member like you.
No, you can solve this problem without command prompt, I suppose, let's give a try.
1)Open settings and click the "Time&Language" tab .It would open to a new window.
2)Click on the language heading listed in the left.
dell .png

3) It would open to another window with it showing what language your keyboard, speech , display etc is using. Just IGNORE that and scroll down the page. You would find a heading "Preferred languages" and if you have any language pack just do this for all. Click on a language ( for example English UK) and after it expands click the options icon.

3)After you clicked the options icon it would open another new window featuring all language packs installed. Scroll down the page featuring "Keyboard" icon and there you would see all languages your keyboard is using.
Click on the English US icon and click remove but if you don't have English UK first select "Add keyboard>Select United Kingdom-QWERTY" and then after you see the UK keyboard available then REMOVE THE US KEYBAORD.

Hope this solves your problem,
please leave a reply,
Best regards,
Tyeberg.

One possible reason that is causing the changing of keyboard language on your computer, may be due to some shortcut keys on your keyboard. To disable automatic keyboard layout change, kindly follow the steps below:

  1. Press Windows key + X on your keyboard.
  2. Choose Control Panel.
  3. Under View by, select Small icon.
  4. Click Language.
  5. On the left side, choose Advance settings.
  6. Under Switching input methods, uncheck Let me set a different input method for each app window.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Restart your computer.

Accidentally pressing some shortcut keys may cause some unwanted changes on your computer. Kindly view the samples below:

Windows Key + Space ke= Changes language/keyboard pairs.
Alt + Shift = Change Language.
Ctrl + Shift = Changes keyboard.

Let us know how it goes.

I`ve got the exact same problem!

originally, i used the Portuguese layout, but when i made a full installation of English, It made certain keys stop working properly.(ç is ; and ; is ?, etc. )

Never mind, I've fixed it!

To do it, go to time & date, then go to language.

Click on the keyboard option, then select another option, to see if one fits your keyboard. You can test it out by opening a browser or notepad.

If it works, then great! If not, try another option.

If none of your options work, then try downloading a language packet with the design of your keyboard.

The option that worked for me was:

English (United Kingdom) - Portuguese (Brasil ABNT2)

Of course, that's probably not your design, but you can just look in your libraries to see one that works for you.

If you don't have one that works, you can always just download a new one!

The only problem is if you have a custom keyboard, where if no designs fit, you might need to get into the nitty-gritty and make one of your own, but i don' really know how to do that, so i can't help you with that.

Hope this Helps!

@JosephOc Powershell is not the same as Command Prompt aka DOS (!). PS is usually automatically installed w/ Win 10+ so just keep the faith and try what is recommended….  The PS version probably needs to be at least 5x but upgrading to 7x may be worthwhile/required. The program is free!
