Latitude 7280 battery

My latitude 7280 had battery problems so I bought a new AC adaptor and battery but it still won't charge. When I plug it in the battery led indicator turns white for a few seconds then off and the AC adaptor is fine. What do I do?

Does the system recognize the AC adapter?  F2 at powerup to check.

If your new charger is not a genuine Dell charger, then that is the problem. If it is a Dell charger, then there is likely a fault with at least one of three items:

  • the charger
  • the charging jack
  • the charging circuit on the motherboard

It's a process of elimination to figure out where the problem lies, or at least where it doesn't lie. For example, if your charger is recognized in BIOS and works on another Dell laptop, then the problem is likely your charging jack or charging circuit.

Try another genuine Dell charger of at least the same wattage/amperage. If that second Dell charger works, then the fault is likely with your charger.

If it doesn't work, then the fault is likely with the jack or the circuit. The jack is a relatively inexpensive item that is not difficult to replace for someone experienced in working on laptops.

If a good charger and a new jack won't work, then the fault is likely with the charging circuit on the motherboard, which would normally require replacement of the motherboard.

My charger isn't genuine but the specs match the one of the one I used to have. Its got the same output and input so what should be wrong with it.

A non-Dell charger may not charge the battery.

Dell laptops can detect a genuine Dell charger. Dell laptops will not operate at full power unless a genuine Dell charger is recognized, and may not charge the battery without a a genuine Dell charger. It might charge the battery if you shut down the laptop and leave it plugged in. Or, it might not.

Also, a non-Dell battery might not charge.

I checked the battery and it said the health was excellent so I'll just get a new charger.

Would it be possible to use a 65W USB c charger to charge it?

If the adapter is unknown, the battery will not charge.  You can try a USB-C charger to see if it works -- or an OEM Dell adapter.  If the USB-C charger works, and if another OEM adapter is unrecognized, the DC jack in the system is the next suspect.

I don't have a Genuine Dell charger but my latitude 7280 charges the battery. Therefore, the problem is that my battery last for 1 hr even if it is fully charged. I want to get suggestions from experts on what should I do so that my battery last for at least 3 hrs. I am distraught about my battery problem. I was making up my mind to change the cells but before doing so I thought that why not get suggestions from experts?

UPDATE: When you install the new battery, be sure to also take off the blue plastic sheet from both cells.  I just tried again, with the 3 month old battery, but taking the sheeting off (there was a wrinkle), looked at the instructions of the new one (to see if I missed the instruction - I didn't)...works great, battery recognized, and at full.  using it now on battery only...

Sorta similar problem.  Old non dell battery had expanded, replaced with a new one (same brand, size all of it), put it in and it would for about 3 months (the expanded one was in a normal life span of 1-2 years), laptop on works is plugged in (genuine Dell charger). Bought a replacement battery, went to try a couple online fixes today (used laptop fine yesterday, no issues (other than having to stay plugged in), and all of a sudden I have to enter my bitlocker recovery key, finally get into system.  Battery report says it is good! but still doesnt work with out being plugged in.

Opened it up, carefully unplugged and reconnected the charging cable.  tried again, and the battery not isnt recognized at all.  not detected.  Put the replacement battery in and still doesnt recognize that a battery is even there.

What am I missing?
