Extend Latitude 5300 display using USB-C

I have a Dell Latitude 5300 (with USB-C and HDMI port) and a Dell U2311H (with DVI and DisplayPort)

Can I extend the laptop screen to monitor using USB-C port from laptop and connect to DisplayPort on the monitor using a USB-C to DP cable? Is there anything I need to watch out for before I place order for the cable?

@SunSlick Yes, that will work.  The Latitude 5300 comes standard with a USB-C port that supports video output, and can optionally be ordered with Thunderbolt 3.  But a USB-C to DP cable will work in either case, and yes you will be able to run the display connected that way independently from your built-in display.

Nothing in particular to watch out for.  If you want some futureproofing, you could get a USB-C to DP cable that's rated for DisplayPort 1.4, which is sometimes advertised as supporting 8K displays.  But those cables are still somewhat uncommon, and your system doesn't support DispayPort 1.4, and obviously you're not trying to run a display that would require anywhere near that amount of bandwidth.  So I wouldn't go too far out of your way or pay too much extra for that.  Other than that, there are some USB-C to DP cables and adapters that also include a built-in USB-C port that can operate as a power passthrough, so if you think it might ever be convenient to be able to use a display and charge your system from a USB-C power source at the same time (rather than a traditional barrel-style charger), that might be worth considering.

Hello, i also have the 8th gen core i7 Dell 5300 with USB-C, coupled to a WD19TB dock, and dual 2419HC screens.
I'd like to explore using a single 42" 4K monitor. You say that the laptop is not DP1.4 compatible, does this mean i can't run 4k at 60hz or more please?
I read somewhere that unless you can achieve DP1.4, you can't run more than 30hz?
What can the Intel UHD620 support through USB-C and the dock?  I am not running any high data requirements through the dock, just a Jabra speaker and mouse.
Thank you, Terry
