I am interested in a genuine Dell battery for E6540 because currently I have none and the Dell bios update exe would not proceed without the presence of battery a safety feature.

ebay search shows N3X1D, but that did not show on my DP/N search on E6540.

my answer: N3X1D is not a Dell part number.  It is the 6-cell battery Type.  It is possibly a battery manufacturer model number.

likewise 71R31 is the 9-cell battery Type.

Will I be able to wake up a Dell laptop elder to help me on Dell bios update?  Is there an app that can force bios update on E6540 in the absence of battery?  I need some guidance.

There is a slew of different batteries that will work with this model system, but given that the system is over 10 years old, and at longest, new OEM batteries are made for only 4-5 years after a system's release, plus the fact that you'll probably pay upward of $100 for an OEM battery (which is the value of, if not more than the value of the entire system), it may not be wise to take that route.

That leaves either a third-party battery from a reputable supplier, or trying the command line approach to the flash process with the /forceit option, which is usually how one bypasses the battery check.  Beware that a failed flash will cost you a system board.

You may also want to contact a local repair shop to see if they have a battery you can borrow to perform the flash update.
