Dell Latitude 7350 USB-C Display To Monitor Issue

It is equipped with 2 x Thunderbolt 4.0 (USB Type C) ports capable of Power Delivery and DisplayPort (video output).
I'm having difficulty getting the laptop to display from the USB-C port to a portable monitor I just purchased from Amazon.  Through the USB-C port, a single cable should be able to power and deliver a video signal to the portable monitor.  Unfortunately, this is not the case with this laptop.  I'm not sure if this is a driver issue or a BIOS setting issue.  I used Dell Control to diagnose and update relevant drivers.
I've troubleshooted the issue the following ways :
1 Cable to Portable Monitor
  • Dell 7350 USB-C (port1) to Portable Monitor USB-C (port1) (does not work - Power)
  • Dell 7350 USB-C (port2) to Portable Monitor USB-C (port1) (does not work - Power)
  • Dell 7350 USB-C (port1) to Portable Monitor USB-C (port1) AND POWER to Portable Monitor USB-C (does not work)
  • Huawei Laptop USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) to Portable Monitor USB-C (port1) (WORKS - Power + Video)
  • Microsoft Surface Laptop USB-C (Non Thunderbolt) to Portable Monitor USB-C (port1) (WORKS - Power + Video)
2 Cable (first cable is power, second cable is video) to Portable Monitor
  • Dell 7350 USB-A to Portable Monitor USB-C (port2) AND Dell 7350 USB-C (port1) to Portable Monitor USB-C (port1) (WORKS - however the laptop thinks it's charging slow)
    • Laptop USB A > Portable Monitor USB C2 > Portable Monitor USB C1 > Laptop USB C1 (charging while sending video signal)
  • Dell 7350 USB-C (port1) to Portable Monitor USB-C (port2) AND Dell 7350 HDMI to Portable Monitor HDMI (WORKS)
  • Dell 7350 USB-A to Portable Monitor USB-C (port2) AND Dell 7350 HDMI to Portable Monitor HDMI (WORKS)
  • Dell 7350 USB-C (port1) to Portable Monitor USB-C (port1) AND Dell 7350 USB-C to Portable Monitor USB-C (port2) (does not work - Power)
Other Test (USB-C to HDMI) to typical Powered Monitor
  • Dell 7350 USB-C (port1) to Powered Monitor HDMI (does not work)
  • Dell 7350 USB-C (port2) to Powered Monitor HDMI (does not work)
  • Huawei Laptop USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) to Powered Monitor HDMI (WORKS)
  • Microsoft Surface Laptop USB-C (Non Thunderbolt) to Powered Monitor HDMI (WORKS)
Thank you for your assistance,
Jeremy

I have tried 3x different USB-C monitors. Each works with other laptops but not the Dell 7350. I have toggled every option I can imagine may interact with this in the BIOS. No improvement. Pretty disappointing :(

After spending hours with a well-intentioned Dell Support tech in a remote session, installing and reinstalling all manner of Dell and Windows drivers and BIOS updates, I, too, was at a loss on how to get my Amazon-bought portable monitor to work with my new 7350 (since it works just fine with my older 5420 using the same USB C cable).

In a last-ditch effort, I tried connecting the 7350's USB C power cable to the Monitor and a USB C cable from the monitor to the laptop—and it worked! Yes, the 7350 said it was slow charging, but this still lets me use only one cable for the monitor plus laptop charger (albeit in a different order). It's not ideal (are you listening Dell?), but bearable.

It's not a perfect solution, but I only need one cable + laptop charger.

@DK2048 Thank you for sharing/posting this solution.  Unfortunately, this does not work for my Latitude 7350 and the Magicraven 2K 14" monitor I purchased from Amazon.  I plugged in the USB C power to the monitor first, then connected the USB C from Monitor to Computer after.  I also tried this with the micro USB port as well, no luck.  Which monitor did you purchase by the way?

That said, I feel like you should be able to simply connect the display to monitor (without any charger) to do work on two screens (eg if you want to do some quick work in your car).

Using the following (plugged in this order) allows your computer to power the monitor :

  • USB A (computer) to USB C (monitor) - powers monitor
  • USB C (computer) to to USB C (monitor) - provides video

I think this is a Dell issue in how the USB C connects with the portable monitor.  In the above configuration, the Dell thinks it is getting a slow charge from the monitor (which is supplied by the USB A from the laptop).

It appears there are others experiencing the same issue on Reddit :

While your solution viable in most instances, it would seem you would need to have a power outlet in order to do work.  Suppose you wanted to get something done quickly on the go (eg in the car).

Cheers
