Dell Dock D6000 Replacement cable
Hi guys,
Long story short, my cat somehow got on my desk, and chewed the USB C cable coming off my Dell D6000 Dock. Now I know this is not under warranty, so I wanted to find a way to replace this cable. Opening the dock reveals a USB C port inside, I've tried several USB C cables I had, but none work. So I'm guessing that this cable is a bit different. I was wondering if it's possible to buy the cable, or if there is an alternative I can use.

Do you know the capabilities of the USB-C cables that you tested? There is significant variation there in terms of how much power they can carry, and whether they support USB 3.1 Gen 2 + DisplayPort, USB 3.1 Gen 1 + DisplayPort, or just USB 2.0. The D6000 only carries up to 60W of power, which is the baseline spec for USB-C cables, so you wouldn't need a cable that can carry up to 100W. In terms of USB 3.0 and DisplayPort, it uses both of those, so you obviously couldn't use a USB-C cable that only carried USB 2.0 and power. I can't remember offhand whether the D6000 takes advantage of USB 3.1 Gen 2, though the documentation on support.dell.com should reveal that. If it doesn't, then any USB-C cable that supports USB 3.1 Gen 1 will also carry DisplayPort, in which case that should work, although I haven't tested the D6000 with an aftermarket cable. If the D6000 uses 3.1 Gen 2, then you'd need a USB-C cable that can handle that. I wrote a long post here about the various types of USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 cables here if you're curious.

Have you called Dell parts yet? They should be able to supply the correct cable. However, FYI I do not believe the replacement cable is cat proof....
Dell Spare Parts at 800-357-3355..have your service tag when/if you call.

Dissapointing. I have been trying to get someone in Dell support to help with replacing my damaged D6000 cable for over three weeks now and they keep telling me I have to buy another brand-new dock as they dont support servicing on docks. The docks are $349 in Australia, and I have had the dock 3 months, so I'm super angry.
Anyone considering buying this dock, I would say "do you feel lucky" because if you accidently damage the cable, you will have to buy another brand-new dock. Seems crazy?!

GOT A SOLUTION!!!!! I'm doing this now and will reply back with results, but looks promising.
I opened up my D6000 dock by peeling off the rubber pad on bottom, unscrewing 4 phillips screws, and gently prying apart the top/bottom of dock.
Guess what, the thunderbolt 3 cable is nothing special, just a 24pin cable with a 90 degree male connector on dock side and a straight male connector on the PC side.
D6000 Insides
I'm purchasing a straight male/male thunderbolt 3 cable with an adapter I found on ebay. The seller says it's good for video/power/data. I found an article from people putting this adapter on their thunderbolt 3 cables for convenience, and pass through is good. I got mine for around $5 plus the cost of the male/male cable, should be close to $10 total.
Here's the guy asking about the cable adapter: https://egpu.io/forums/psu-cables/right-angled-thunderbolt-3-cable-or-adapter/
Here's a bunch of feedback and good results on passthrough including test results (good): https://egpu.io/forums/psu-cables/90-degree-angle-usb-c-adapter/
This is the adapter I'm trying out: https://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-C-90-Degree-Angle-Adapter-Type-C-Male-To-Female-Converter-Connector-Phone-PC/254351473511?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=553905271759&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649
I let you all know how it goes.. BTW this cable has to be available out there someplace, Dell is sourcing them someplace, just can't find any on ebay and I looked.

OK, good news, bad news.
1. I got the new cable in there, had to open up a hole directly above the female USB-C Thunderbolt connector and go straight out of the top of the dock. I taped it up around to secure and taped up the old hole.
2. Bad news, the dock was dead. It did power up but I could not get it to connect. I'm sure the dock died due to a short or something when the original cable bent/broke.

I tried a USB c 3.1 gen 2 cable and it did not work for mine either. Anyone find a solution for this?

Dell, is there a solution to this yet? I just bought my D6000 through a 3rd party, and then my kids accidentally broken the usb-c connector of the cable. Is there anyway we can order a replacement cable from somewhere and do the repair ourselves?

My cat must be related to yours. He has now chewed 2 of that same cable from the docking station! I’m looking for a less expensive solution than buying another docking station.

I too am in the same predicament here. Has anybody found a replacement USB-C cable that works properly here? I have tried three separate cables at this point:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076D76DRQ
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0718Z1MWF
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CEFESRO
Not a single one of these cables worked! My guess is that there must be something proprietary about the USB-C that is part of the D6000?

I think there probably is something proprietary about the cables, yeah. I bought my dock from a third party as well (with no returns ) and the USB-C connector was slightly damaged. I tried out these cables and adapters and none of them worked:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VMKRKBR/: does not detect, plus the right angle part would be too large to fit in the case in either case
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QXQ921J/: the white LED turns on for a tiny amount of time, but nothing happens. A message from Windows displays and says "device descriptor request failed"
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B072JYDQ7N/: same as last
Since the cable is only a little damaged, I can still attach the regular USB-A adapter to it and it works fine (but I don't get the charging out of it). Because of this, I wanted to try out a 90-deg USB adapter and I tried out this one:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B077XBDKBH/
but while that one works, it constantly gives me a message from Windows saying the device didn't connect properly... every couple of minutes. (Also, there's no way the case would've closed in any case).
I guess I can live with using the USB A adapter + the USB C charger, but would definitely prefer to have a single cable. Agh! Why can't Dell just release the cable as a replacement part? This is the most frustrating thing about Dell I've had to deal with.

I'm tempted to try this one out:
https://www.startech.com/Cables/thunderbolt-3-cables/thunderbolt-3-40gbps-usb-c-cable~TBLT34MM50CM
but it's $35 and have no idea if it would even work!

I also have the same issue with the D6000. I have tried the Startech Thunderbolt 3 passive cable as per your link. This also did not work. I have to come to the conclusion that the Dell cable / internal header as originally installed is a proprietary unit.
I also have tried the various grades of USB C cables as mentioned elsewhere in this thread , also to no avail.

I'm also going nuts with this... I've tried so many different cables, none of them works.
the original cable seems to be manufactured by this company: https://www.bizlinktech.com/ but they don't sell replacement pieces so no luck so far

Tried this, and no luck: Nekteck USB-C to USB C 3.1 Gen2 Cable 3ft with Power Delivery, Thunderbolt 3 Compatible,USB-IF Certified >>>
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0718Z1MWF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thought being USB-IF and USB-PD compatible it might work - nope.
May resort to cutting the end of the old damaged one and splicing / soldering this new one on. Of course, that may fry my laptop.....
