Laptop stuck in standby?

Once I close the lid of my Inspiron 6000, when I open it later, the screen doesn't come back on; the power light is still on and can see the other "processing" light flicker occasionally as if the computer is still working but the screen won't come on; it didn't use to do this; any suggestions? I can't ALT-DELETE or turn power off; I have to unhook the battery to restart the computer and get the screen to come on;

Hello there,

This may or may not be of any help, but here goes; First, anytime you need to turn off your laptop or desktop for that matter, hold the power button down for about 5 seconds, and it will power off. Note that any programs, or work you may have had open will be closed, and unsaved documents or projects MAY be lost, but the computer will shut down.

After you re-boot, you can then go into your power profile and make a few changes. There are several ways to get into the power settings, but the easiest for me is to right-click the ac-plug icon usually located in the lower right hand corner of your screen. If you are running on battery power then it would be the battery icon instead. The options then will include "adjust power properties". (Select this option)  Then click on the advanced tab and see where it says "when I close the lid on my portable computer" and select "do nothing". (this will allow you to close the lid and only the screen will shut off but will come back on when reopened) Where it says "when I press the power button on my computer" I select "shutdown my computer" (I like that because I never have to select "start-shutdown" on the desktop, I just hit the power button and that's it. Handy)

Then lastly I set "when I press the sleep button on my computer" and I select "standby"

Select the Hibernate tab next. I don't have "Hibernate" enabled on my laptop because I have had too many issues with that feature in the past, however I know many people use it just fine. If you do not use Hibernate then uncheck the box here.

Good luck-Kiwibum

If it is in hibernation, it won't come out of it;  In the power management section, it states that when I close my laptop lid, it is supposed to go to standby; I had to choose "do nothing" when the laptop lid is closed to keep from having to reboot by disconnecting the battery; it didn't used to do this; the only thing I can think that could have changed is that my 14 month old likes to push buttons when I'm not looking and I wonder if he could have hit something that causes this; I just don't know what or what could get it back to normal; thought I would check to see if anyone had ideas

You are welcome.

I hope it helps. I personally do not see the need for hibernate. That is why I elect to uncheck it.

Enjoy your weekend.

thanks for your reply; my prev. post was to the first person who posted and then all of the sudden there was our post; I had already changed the "when lid closed" to "do nothing", but will also change the other things you listed; thanks for your help

We're having the same issue with 600m and latitude d610. However, disabling standby when closing the lid is not an acceptable solution for us. The laptops are taken on the road and they'll quickly run out of battery if they aren't suspended. I suspect it's an issue with the video driver. Anybody else have any other suggestions?
