Using an external monitor with laptop screen off or closed.

I have an Inspiron with a Nivida GeForce FX Go 5200 and an external computer monitor connected to the VGA output. Using the two screens at the same time works great but I would like to be able to watch a DVD or play games on the external monitor with the laptop LCD off or closed.

Does anybody know of how to do this? Is there any third-party software available?

I read somewhere if you close the lid while the power is on, it can melt the LCD. Is this true?

Have you tried the Fn+F8 buttons. I haven't tried using 2 monitors so I'm not sure if this works.

Edit: You didn't mention the model number, so you may not have these keys on your Inspiron.

change  windows power  settings...

1)open up control panel.. click power options  goto the advanced tab.

change   'when i close the lid of my portable computer'  to          'do nothing.'

you will now be able to close  the lid and continue to watch whatever you like on your external monitor

Sorry, I have a 5150. That worked great, I should have seen that. Thanks
