USB Logitech Mouse (or any mouse) when plugged in will not work

I have been trying for hours to get this new Inspiron 9100 laptop to use an external mouse...mouse properties only show the touch pad and keyboard pointer...how do you get the computer to use an external mouse?

After reviewing some other posts, the problem is due to installing WIN XP Pro over the Home edition.  The USB ports become disabled and the Dell Drivers for the ports have to be reinstalled...working fine now.

well i wish that my usb mouse would work, unfortunately the only thing that happens on my inspiron is the pointer sits still and the light on my usb logitech mouse lights up when you move it.. cannot find drivers for win 2000 to make the usb port work the mouse works on the ps2 port but not the usb port ... if you could help that is cool i would really appreciate it

thanks
