Studio 1535 monitor not displaying, volume controls flashing

My Studio 1535 (laptop with Vista) suddenly stopped showing any display a few days ago.  I have tried disconnecting the power cord and the battery, and doing a shutdown by holding down the power key, but none of these methods have had any effect.  I have had nothing but a blank screen, but when I attach an external monitor, everything is operating properly on the external monitor, so it doesn't seem to be a processor issue.  The day this started, I went to boot up the computer and there was a lot of beeping going on, so I had to remove the batter and the power cord to make it stop.

I also have flashing volume control keys, and was wondering if that might be a clue to what is going on, and what needs to be corrected?  The Mute key and the Volume Up key are flashing on and off at the same time.  The Volume Down key is steadily on.  I will say that prior to about two weeks ago, the Media shortcut keys had all stopped working for about a year.  Suddenly they started working again, (and actually continue to work), but the monitor is just a black screen.  Any idea if this could be a backlight issue, video chip issue or something else?  I'd like to at least be able to salvage the laptop for my kids to use if the fix is not too expensive.  Thanks!

(This all began after a recent iTunes update, but I'm not thinking that is related.  Just throwing it out there.)

Hi DraagynLady,

Let's try the following steps and see it works.Run the LCD BIST.

To run the LCD BIST (Built in Self-test):

  • Power off the computer
  • Press and hold the D key on the keyboard while pressing the power button, then release both at the same time.
  • This will initiate A grey screen, then Red, then Blue, then Green, then White

I would recommend you to check the status of the volume keys. You may watch the video for possible LED codes that may display with the possible failure:

Please reply if you have any questions.

Thanks for your response.  I ran the LCD BIST, and the colors displayed on my laptop monitor just like you said.  So what does that mean?  Also, I checked out the video above, and none of the flashing patterns match mine currently, although I think I remember all three flashing a few days ago, following the beeping that wouldn't stop.

Hi DraagynLady,

Thank you for the response. Since you get display on the external monitor, the motherboard should be fine. You can try to reseat the LCD cable if you are comfortable. Here are the steps:

Note: Please ensure that all peripherals are disconnected; battery is removed and AC Adapter is unplugged from the computer.

  • Remove the two hinge cover screws from the battery bay area

  • Starting in the middle, gently lift the hinge cover away from the palm rest. Use your fingertips, plastic scribe or plastic screwdriver in removing the plastics. Using other tools may cause cosmetic damage to the customer's system.

  • Carefully rotate the hinge cover towards the keyboard.

  • Lift the zif connector on the multimedia board cable.

  • Disconnect the multimedia cable from the multimedia board.

  • Remove the hinge cover.

  • Use the blue pull-tab to disconnect the display cable

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi, it's been a few months since this thread was started but I have the exact same problem. Did you find a fix?

Symptoms are the same for me - blank laptop screen but working fine on an external monitor, with flashing mute and vol up but steady vol down (not listed in that video posted above). the lcd bist works and the display is bright and colourful during it. i've tried 2 different similar (but not exact model number) lcd screens and a couple of different inverters but no luck. i also reseated the lcd display cable to the board but it was secure anyway.

i'm out of ideas - i'm unconvinced it's the screen/inverter/cable as the lcd bist works correctly, and its not a major system fault (like ram) as it works fine on an external.

anyone have any ideas?

thanks,

emmet

Any answers?

My wife's computer started doing this 3 day ago. It rebooted 3 times then worked fine. Yesterday it started again but no joy today. External monitor and self test of LCD all work fine. Reconnected all cables.

Anyone?

Thanks,

Will

Hi Will,

Since the external monitor works fine and LCD test has passed, it might be an issue with the LCD cable. The suggested part replacement would be to replace the LCD cable first and check if the issue persists.

Also, you may try to tilt the LCD screen at a particular angle, check if any display shows up.

Hi Appu S,

First I would like to thank you for the fast reply.

Second I have tried the screen in different positions and also moving the connector and cable around on the motherboard.

Can you get me the part number from Dell for the LCD cable so I can order it.

Would you like me to open a new topic or is this fine here?

Thanks,

Will

Hello I have the exact same problem as the topic creator. My laptop is also a Studio 1535 and Volume down button is solidly lit whilst volume up and mute are blinking. When I connect an external display it works fine.

However my sequence for the monitor self test is different, it goes: gray, red, green, blue, white, grey and finally red again.

Does my LCD cable also need replacing or is it a different issue?

Hello guys

I know this thread has been inactive for the past few years.

But I'm having a similar kind of problem with my Dell studio 1535 running Windows 7 64bit.

When I power on the system, the screen goes blank. Then the volume up and mute buttons keep flashing while the volume down button is on but doesn't flash.

I have connected it to an external monitor but I don't find any display in the beginning and after sometime a weird screen with an array of square blocks of different colours come up.

I have tried the LCD bist test and the results are grey blank red green blue white blank red green.

Also the Bluetooth button lights up and goes off and then becomes steady.

I haven't tried opening the system.

Could anyone diagnose the issue?

Thank you
