Screen, Hot Spot at Edge Turns Corner Black

Can anyone help me to get the screen of my laptop working properly. The machine is an Inspiron 1200, purchased in UK 6½ years ago. This post is coming from an African village; I will have to fix this problem myself, because there are no computer techs around.

At the lower right of the screen, a small area at the corner of the display turns black, right where the time is displayed. With the surrounding, plastic cover off, the bottom edge of the screen is burny-hot. Turning the laptop off, waiting a few minutes, then turning it back on results in a clear, normal screen, but it slowly turns black again over the next few minutes. By that time the metal edge of the screen is again too hot to touch at that one spot. From my blundering around the internet, it seems to me that the hotspot corresponds to the end of the CCFL. Can anything be done about this? Does it sound like the kind of problem which can be fixed with small screwdrivers?

The inverter itself could be bad and overheating - channeling the heat along the wires or metal frame of the LCD.  That would be the first part to replace.  IF that doesn't solve the problem, and it's the bulb that's bad, you'll find that replacing the screen is cheaper than a bulb replacement would be.

Sounds like the inverter (backlight power supply) is faulty - yes, that can be replaced, but the damage to the screen will require that you replace it as well.

Thanks for that reply, ejn63.

Can anyone give me a clue as to how a faulty inverter would cause the CCFL to become hot, at one end only? Meanwhile, I will plod around the internet looking for parts supplier.

The black spot on the screen is never more than the size of a fingernail, and is not permanent. When the laptop is switched on, there is no black spot at first, but starts growing out from the corner after a minute or so. That is when I switch over to an external monitor. If I go back to the laptop's screen after a while, I find that the spot has gone, but it reappears after another minute.

Thanks again, ejn63.

The wires from the inverter are not hot. With nothing to lose, I dismantled my way into the bottom of the screen and saw the end of the CCFL; The hotspot corresponds exactly with the end of it. I wiggled things about, and put it all back together. The situation in now satisfyingly worse. Not only is the hotspot still there, but brightness across that corner of the screen is quite uneven.

Clearly, playing with the CCFL is not something which a novice should do. Off now to order a new screen.

LCD is working, neon light is working, but with dark  and very hot spot ...I had the same problem and  FIXED IT. How?  Dark  triangle right of the screen is very very hot  from the point where thin wire from inverter is welded to neon bulb . The contact become bad and wire become very thin and burned . My solution: Deansembled   LCD  frame, find the spot where is connection of red wire from inverter to neon bulb (he plastic frame around were already melted), clean the place, cut the wire, cut the bad peace of the wire (10mm prox) clean everything around and weld again to the neon bulb . The contact is now new. Using my laptop again for weeks with no hot and black spots.  Greetings from Serbiahttps://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-poT6WIe8u9w/Tu_Kzn5oM8I/AAAAAAAAAF8/sYywgBnygdU/s912/IMG_5741.JPG
