Replacing Latitude battery - voltage compatibility

I need a new battery for my Dell Latitude E6400. The battery that was in the computer when I got is 37 whr and 14.8v but all the replacement batteries (OEM and non-OEM) that I can find that say they are compatible for this laptop are 11.1v.

Dell's own website does not provide voltage info for its replacement battery. I acquired this laptop second hand so its possible that the battery that came with it wasn't compatible in the first place.

I understand that it is important to match the voltage correctly when replacing batteries. Does anyone know what the voltage of the replacement battery available from Dell is or what the voltage should be for this laptop?

I just had a similar situation with a 1300 series. The orinial dell battery said 14.8v. If you look up the dell part number on the original battery online it said 11.1 volts even thou 14.8 was printed on the battery. I ordered the 11.1v battery and it works fine.

Batteries that are constructed of  multiples of three cells in series are 11.x volts. Batteries that have four cells in series are 14.x volts. More and better quality cells translate to higher capacity but at higher cost.

I suggest that the E6400 was offered with factory fit 4, 6 or 9 cell batteries. The best battery would be the 9 cell, if you can get one. Some of the cheap Chinese after markets will have only 3 cells.

So buy the battery with the highest capacity.

For info for anyone else with similar questions, I've tracked down the manual (http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/late6400/en/sfit/Nu0312D.pdf) for this laptop and spoken to Dell tech support and confirmed that both 11.1v and 14.8v batteries CAN be used.

News to me, as I thought laptops had to be matched to one voltage rating.

Thanks. But from what I've seen available (mostly Dell PT434 and Dell NM631) are only available as 11.1v rated, whereas the battery that I am replacing was 14.8v rated.  Will there not be a problem if I replace a 14.8v battery with an 11.1v rated battery? I had thought that it was important to keep the voltage the same.

Thanks, that's really helpful. So it sounds as though I could replace the 4-cell 14.8v battery with a 6 or 9 cell 11.1v battery without problems - is that right?
