Network Adapter

Hiya All

Im not sure if anyone can shed some light on this, my daughter has a Dell Inspiron 1525, It keeps losing its ' network adapter'

i formatted it and it was back to 'factory state' updated it all working fine,

shut it down, next day network adapter missing, first i thought the cause was a windows update so uninstalled that and it was fine, carried on using it and all fine turned it off, then when i turned it back on, it was missing again, 'blew out the laptop in case any dust etc was lurking, checked connections, checked drivers etc all fine, took battery out started it up and network adapter was back, all working fine when shut down, started it up again next day no network adapter again

put battery back in restarted it and it was back again, shut down, booted it back up again and gone again !

Now its back again but i cannot think what keeps happening to it

perplexedagain,

When you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the notebook system utility and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

The other option might be the the wireless adapter maight have come loose. Instructions to reseat the wireless card can be found HERE.

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Thank you for your suggestions Rick

When i reinstalled, and when windows came on the screen i was already connected to the internet, if the rest of the drivers failed to install would it have ever connected ? which it does, every now and again it loses the network adapter, but not all the time which is the confusing thing,

I have checked the wireless adapter and it looks and feels firmly in place, and as i say it is connected at this moment,

perplexedagain,

Ever update the firmware in your wireless router?

Do you use the Recommended Wireless Router Settings, I use channel 11.

perplexedagain,

Change it to channel 1, 6 or 11. I use channel 11. It won't affect the other computers except for a few seconds to reconect.

If the problem computer is Vista/Windows 7, try running Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and post the rest of the information back here.

I checked the firmware in the router and there are no updates, i have 2 other laptops and a desktop connected to the router that have never failed, I have checked all the settings as per your recommendations, and all are the same except channel is auto,

Rick

Right i have done all that, and meanwhile looked in the belkin site and got an update for the firmware apparently there was one, originally i was just checking for update via my setting page and it was telling me there wasnt one,

The settings i have was origianally set up FOR me when i first had the network setup, and i have just always copied them when formatting etc, so do you think i should change these settings for all my laptops/desktop ?

this is a Belkin G Plus .. if that makes a difference, Ive had a fair few years and never had a problem with it until this Dell Laptop, which i should add isnt always here, its my daughters and only comes here now and again

So would u advise that i change my settings on all the devices ?

perplexedagain,

Change what settings? If they all work, then there is no problem.

All the laptop in my home use DHCP enabled and they cannect with no problems. The antenna diversity is a setting that seems to help connect and is on some adapters but I don't know which ones. I have my wife's set from Auto to Aux and she has no problems connecting.

I would try with the recommened settings, use channel 11 and use the DHCP settings. You can also try the power management tweak.

perplexedagain,

Belkin...

Had an issue with a Belkin Wireless N router not being able to recognize the difference between WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security(Personal) and WPA-AES. Had the person try WEP or NO security and had no problems connecting the wireless device. May be something to look at. Belkin may either deny this or know nothing about this.

perplexedagain,

Is there a reason that DHCP is not enable for the wireless adapter?

Start, control panel, networking and sharing center, clcik on your network connection, properties. Under TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6, click on each, then click on properties and make them both look like the picture below.

In start, control panel, device manager, network, Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card, double click on it. Power management. Uncheck the box. allow windows to turn off this device to save power. Also click on advanced. Look and see if this card has antenna diversity. Some wireless adapters have this and some don't. If your adapter has this, try changing the settings from auto to AUX, then restart your computer.

perplexedagain,

The static ip address is ok but you need to make sure the other computers don't have the same ip address or the one will disconnect the pther one off the network. Using DHCP avoids this from happening. DHCP is also nice because when you go to a public WiFi, it can automatically obtain an ip address and connect.

The power management tweaks I use for all my network adapters and I also use this for my USB Root Hubs.

Also try reading...

Intel® WiFi Products — Power Save Polling (PSP) causes connection issues with some access points

This doesn't pretain to the wireless card in the problem machine but if you have other adapters, you may want to check them in case this is the issue.
