My laptop gives 5 beeps sound when it starts

I have Dell Inspiron N5050. It gives 5 beeps sound with repeated intervals before windows starts and ends when windows is open. Some times after the windows is open beeps sound faints to a very low volume that is hard to listen but it does not stop sounding. I have run the F12 diagnostics and the result it gave was 'everything is working fine'. Please note that during the memory check up I aborted the diagnostic setup when it gave me the option to abort. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi tahyrabbas,

I’d suggest that you follow the steps mentioned below and check if the beep pattern repeats.

  1. Switch off the computer.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter from the system.
  3. Remove the battery from the computer.
  4. Press and hold down the power button for 15 seconds.
  5. Then connect back all the peripherals and check if the beep pattern repeats and reply us with the beep count.

5 Beeps on the system means’ Real Time Clock (RTC) power fail’ and the cause of the issue is ‘CMOS battery failure’. I’d suggest that you update BIOS and chipset driver on your computer to check for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, then download the BIOS from BIOS section and chipset from chipset section onto the system and install it.

Please let me know the findings.

Hello Ravi,

I just followed your instructions and restated the laptop. It has not given any beep sound this time. Does it still need to update BIOS and Chipset ?

Thanks.

Replace the reserve (CMOS) battery (p. 41 of the service manual):

If that doesn't solve the problem, the clock chip is bad and the mainboard will need to be replaced.
