No one's going to be able to offer much assistance without knowing:
What model system?
How much total RAM?
What operating system, version and whether it's 64-bit or 32-bit?

Dell INSPIRON 1501 Laptop I put 2- 1GB 200 PIN SODIMM 128X64 DDR2PC2 - 5300 that I got from crucial but only 1.87 shows up right now. It is running 32 - bit version of Win XP Home right now.
I won't to put a 64 - bit version of Win 7. When I check to see if it will run Microsoft tells me the only thing I still need is at least 2GB.

What you're seeing is normal - the system uses some RAM for video purposes.

I wouldn't attempt to run 64-bit Windows in less than 4G of RAM -- 2G is barely sufficient.
