M1730 sub-par performance Am I alone?

So i bought a $4,500 machine, thats supposedly intended for gaming, i load up WoW (a 4 year old game) and its not going over 26 FPS on major cities, Unreal Tournament 3? lol that would be the day when it runs over 15FPS on acceptable settings.

Ud think its normal "laptops cant do that" stuff but its wrong, i have a 7950GT XPS 1710 and that runs FINE at 43 FPS in wow and 25 in UT3.

so seriously am i missing something here?

Im currently using XP SP2, Nvidia Forceware 169.23 and yes the laptop is running in SLI.

I havnt found a single game this machine can run at a decent framerate.

If my XPS 1710 wasnt running better id understand but seriously people am i the only one getting this stupid framerate off my machine?

Dont even get me started on vista, it was so slow i could barely exit UT3 from the sluggishness.

 Stats are:

 XPS 1730

 4gb Ram, 400gb (200x2 7200 Raid 0)

 8700 SLI

 2.4ghz non extreme processor.

And to all those with extreme processors, if you are going to say "all games run fine in mine" and you have an extreme processor thats because your processor is picking up the videocards slack, while it does the job it thats not how it should be, the 1710 i got has a core 2 duo 2.2 and no extreme and outperforms this machine so bad it hurts.

im not sure what the deal is but i play wow with everything set to max and i never get a hic up, i also play HL2 and CS:S all max'ed out aswell and it runs smooth. The only game im a little unhappy about is "The Witcher" and its just not as fast as i really expected it to be esp since ive toned down the graphic setting quite a bit.

are you using an extreme processor? what are your system stats? OS, Nvidia driver, etc?

Also, are you playing wow at 1920x1200? with full antialiasing and all quality settings set on high quality (on the nvidia control panel)

Because i can get wow to run smooth at 1650x1200 with everything - in game - on high but if i place the nvidia options on the control panel to high and try to run it at 1920x1200 it gives 24-29fps, and drops to 12-16 when i move around

Think driver issues have a lot to do with this and generally I try to stay away from MS updated pertaining to nvidia. Also there is a nvidia update on the MS update page that I am staying away from. I remember with Xp on a older box that had a nvidia Gforce 2 64 driver from XP. Anyways I decided to update all my drivers from the hardware sites and everything expecally the vid card ran a lot faster and better with hardware native drivers. Also remember hearing about how the mobile drivers are not yet at par with the tower drivers as of yet. And you are right in being mad as this should have been fixed by now.

The office review Dell m1730 ran UT3 at 1920x1200 with dual SLI and Aegia physics enabled just fine.

I didn't have fraps running but it felt smooth and responsive even when mad stuff was going on. I'd say at least 50fps.

We were using Dell drivers but not sure if the ones we used were available to the public yet.

The hardware can definitely handly all the games you described it'd just a matter of software/drivers. Use the latest available Dell supplied drivers and you should be ok.

Crysis would be the exception and had to turn that down to about 1650 to play on max as 1920 was sluggish.

Unfortunately, I don't get to review the laptops or take them home so can't do any tests for you (I personally have the 1530). But can assure you it looked kickass when I did get to play on it. Think my next lappy will have a 8800 GTS/GTX card though.

Your not alone.  I just bought a max loaded M1730.  Updated all the drivers to see if I could fix the problem and yet I am still running ONLYL 29-30 FPS on World of Warcraft.  Sadely my older laptop with half the power and only running a GS 7900 video cards maintains 60 FPS!!! at the same video settings without SLI.

The Problem:   Its not the Computer.  Its the Drivers for the Video Cards.  Still havn't worked out all the glitchs.  Nvidea is aware of the problem and there is a hot fix link threw Microsoft on the Dell Driver update page.   Just hope the have a new driver release soon to fix our FPS.

Dell needs to help fix this SUB par GAME performance and FAST!!!

Well thankfully im not going insane, yes i too have a XPS 1710 with a 7950GT video card and i get 45-60 FPS in WoW.... exact same screen... exact same game.. exact same config... (i basically just copied the entire folder from one computer to the other, all settings included) and the performance was way dissapointing. i REALLY hope its a driver issue and that they get it fixed fast i was soo angry i was about to return the machine but then i remembered id waited 3 months to get it and id be left with no computer so i kept it anyway but im still far far from happy with this purchase.

Hi Acortes, Why don't you try making a fresh install of the game? I'm pretty sure this is a software / drivers issue, it always is when this doesn't happen to all people. Or maybe it could be a hardware problem...maybe psu is overheating but just not enough to power down the computer, or maybe any other faulty hardware, i should try formatting (since it does not matter how well you uninstall nvidia drivers they always leave something behind) and using dell drivers first instead of microsoft ones.

Ok, just to set some data straight.

Ive reformated the machine 17 times now, 6 vista 11 with xp, ive tried every single driver there is up till now, (153.17, 158.12, 161.09,163.14, and up to recently ,and the one im running, 169.21 which seems the best one so far but still abysmal to expectations.) and i didnt reinstall the drivers, i reformated the machine every time i tried a different one along with all the machines drivers, the game doesnt require an installation, i have installed it this way on over 15 machines in 4 years never had any problems, its a copy, run reg, run game thing, it doesnt write or store anything in the registry thats why it doesnt cause problems when you just copy/run it.

I have tried dell drivers and non dell drivers both in vista and xp, it is after i finally gave up that i came to post in these forums as im sure its imposible that someone else hadnt noticed this if i had done all that and still didnt work properly.

and sadly im still trying to figure out why the 169.21 drivers still make my machine hang when it exits suspend, im currently tryign to find out the cause but no luck so far.

ohh yeah and another thing thats why i came here, to see if i wasnt the only one, if some people say their machines run just fine with no problems i want to know what is it that they are running so i can replicate their setups and check.

BTW theres some people with extreme processors on these machines, if you have an extreme processor on one of these the processor will pick up the videocards slack, and the games will run "just fine" however this should never be the case, it should always be a more heavy load on the GPU than the CPU, if your CPU is doing more work than ur GPU then you have a serious performance problem on your GPU side.

Ive heard that if you overclock the X7700 most games except crysis run fine, however what i fail to see is how can my 3 year old machine have the same if not better performance than this one, its completely unexplainable and certainly also unacceptable, sure might be drivers, or faulty design on the videocard model or what not, the goal is to find out if somethings wrong with this machine and its just me or if its not just me and there is other people also getting these same issues.

The fact that they are shipping a wow version of this machine has got to have SOME players scorned, (if it is indeed a problem with the power of the videocard). im just looking for more info from other sources to see where im standing and be able to make more asserted desicions.

Gonna put a fresh post on later - my original 3dmark06 was 3446 - which is shocking for this laptop - totally removed vista and reinstalled it, updated with vista hot fixes and drivers from dell, 3dmark06 now - 9014!!!! very good!! think it could also have something to do with dell's bloated software...... just a thought....

This laptop does run OTHER programs just fine.. blazingly fast.  ITs the video DRIVER compatability with the GAME WORLD OF WARCAFT at Max resolution where the problem lies.    Funny considering Dell advertises the World of Warcraft laptop for playing WoW.   Just got done with a 1 hour Dell Tech session online to fix my problem.  Starting Framerate 30.  After session was done.   11 fps.   LOL.    Well I just gave up on running at max resolution with WoW.  Driver runs well at 1600 X 1050 resolution at 60 fps.   Its the max resolution which is malfunctioning with the Nvidia 8700.   Seems to be a hiccup in the driver.

Talked to some other buyers of the M1730.  Problem is across the board.   Someone mentioned they fixed the problem by rolling back the driver to an older date.  He is suppose to send me an email with the version he rolled it back to soon.  I'll keep you posted if this works.

Im sure Nvidia will fix this problem..   Its just the time it takes them...

Because their are no 169.21 drivers for laptops, the latest driver available is 167.45 for Vista and 156.61 for XP. Anything newer then that are desktop drivers and not meant for mobile cards.
