Back up data before performing PC restore/Operating system reinstallation.

Follow below steps ( for Windows Vista/7)  to perform PC restore:

• Turn on the computer.
• As the computer starts, press on the keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen. 
• Note: You must press before the Windows logo appears on the screen. If you press after the Windows logo appears on the screen, the Advanced Boot Options menu will not appear on the screen. If you do not see the Advanced Boot Options menu, restart the computer, and then repeat this step until you see the menu on the screen.  
• Press the on the keyboard to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press .
• Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.
• Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.
• Click Dell Factory Image Restore.
• In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.
• Click to select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box.
• Click Next. The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.
• When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer.

The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.

Thanks for you reply Rajesh. But I tried all of your steps up until #7 where I click on "Dell Factory Image Restore" . It was just not there. Are there any other options you might recommend?

Hi Ben,

If a clean installation of operating system was done on the computer, the registry path for the factory image would be lost. The new registry would replace the path when a clean install is done.

I am with the same problem: I have a Latitude 5400, but is not possible to restore the factory settings due my factory image get lost. I also do not have the original CD's, so I need a link in order to download to the factory image for my DELL. The service tag is HK36WK1 (BIOS A18)

That system was shipped with Windows Vista with downgrade rights to Windows XP. Windows XP reached end of life a year ago and Windows Vista is fastly becoming obsolete (no IE10/11, Office 2013 or new drivers being made for Vista or Digital Distribution) with all Windows Vista systems out of warranty and Dell no longer stocking Windows Vista installation media. Your system's warranty expired in September 17 2012.

As Windows 7 and 8.1 will ne made obsolete in summer with the free upgrade to Windows 10 (Windows Vista systems aren't eligible for the free upgrade) its not worth installing these operating systems. The most economic way to get to Windows 10 will be via the Windows 10 Insider program which is a pre-release test version that you can try here:

I'm trying to restore mine as well. I purchased this computer a company downsizing. It has Data Encryption as well.

The service tag is HV43P12 Express Service Code 38886642038

How do I go about restoring this??

It will depend on how the encryption was done.  It'll be more challenging if it was by BitLocker and TPM than if it was a software-only encryption system.

We'll need to know how it was encrypted before help can be rendered, but one way or another you'll need to purchase a copy of Windows for use on the system.
