Laptop XPS M1330 Smoking

I have a Dell XPS M1330 laptop that I purchased a few years ago.  Since day one I've had overheating problems if I attempted to run anything other than typical programs.  For example, playing a video game who overheat and crash the system in a matter of minutes.  Since I purchase the laptop for that very reason and upgraded to the NVidia card, it was very upsetting.

Anyway, since Dell couldn't / wouldn't help I just resigned myself to using it for little things next to my primary PC.  A couple month ago the monitor went and it was actually on the last day of an extended warranty so I was able to get it replaced.  Dell had extended the warranty for the monitor on that model because there were problems.

So, this morning I close the cover to my laptop and all of a sudden a lot of smoke starts coming out of the area to the bottom left of my display, near were the cord plugs into the laptop.  I unplugged it and got it shutdown and the smoke went away.  I was able to reboot it and the laptop works, but the display does not.  I had to plug in a external monitor.  And it doesn't seem to smoke anymore, but I haven't put it on other than that once.

I did all kinds of research and found some others who had the same problem.  One even has a video on YouTube showing my exact model, with the smoke and source of the smoke as well.

So my question is, the laptop is out of warranty but since this problem poses a serious threat to safety (well, I assume burning down my house was a possibility), is Dell responsible for fixing this?

Any help would be appriciated!

exceptions would be on a case-by-case basis...  so never say never I guess

You will not get extended warranties based on anything other than having purchased extended warranty.  In other words "no" they are not required to service this system based on your situation.

I appriciate the response.  I figured as much, but since it was a safety concern and happened to the display which they just replaced 7 months ago I thought there would be an exception.

It also goes without saying that just as hearing a scraping noise from your out of warranty car brakes means you should have it checked by a mechanic at your expense, you should do the same in this case since there's clearly a safety hazard possibility.

Hello,

Today morning I also had the same kind of experience with the same model....but my problem is more serious......it shut down automatically and then smoking near the point where the heat sink is located...so can you please tell me how did you repair the issue.....as it is out of warranty and I am sure it will cost like a hell if I think of repairing by a service centre.....thanks for any kind of suggestion....

My wifes laptop, xps m1330 did the same thing the other night, Smoke started to come out near where the power-cord plugs in. Now the laptop wont boot from battery and I don't dare to plug the power adaptor in. Have taken the HDD out and it works when I connect it to a desktop. So all data is ok, thanks good.

Have checked the power adapter and it seems ok, delivering 19,5 volts. So the fault must be in the laptop.

Any solution? Any part that can be echanged?

Thanks for any advice on this.

The fault that was diagonosed in  my case was improper adapter. I was told that sudden spark from adapter may cause this type of problem. I used one Adapter that I bought from ebay. One small power chip was completely burned.

Repairing in Europe was nearly same price as buying a new laptop !! Hence I took it back with me and my brother repaired it in a shop in Bangalore at only 1800 INR. Its working fine now.  The bottom line is "I am never going to buy cheap adapter from ebay"

Thank´s for your reply Bdsinha. Do not think its the adapter. Tried booting on battery and it started to smell burnt immediately,

Wish I had a brother that could fix it at that rate too :-) You´re probably right that sending it to Dell will cost a small fortune. Not worth it on a 3 year old unit.

The problem is at the chip on the motherboard where it gets connected with adapter...Now, I was told (i do not know much on hardware) that this chip can be burned if the adapter is of not good quality.....the adapter remains perfectly fine but due to sudden spark it generates, damages the chip on motherboard...you need to replace the chip or get a new motherboard......you can actually see this burned chip once you open the back of the laptop and the fan...you can see in youtube how to open it...
