KVM Keyboard error when connecting to port replicator

I hooked up a Belkin 2-port KVM Switch to the USB on the back of the Port Replicator for my Inspiron 8500 laptop. 

 

The USB ViewSonic Keyboard and USB Mouse drivers were installed previously when the keyboard and mouse were directly hooked up to the laptop.  At that time they both were recognized and functioned to spec.

 

After connecting the KVM to the Port Replicator the laptop fails to recognize the keyboard -- the video and mouse are not a problem.  Connecting the KVM directly to the laptop, there is no problem.

 

I'm looking for suggestions on what to try next.
