@ key is in wrong place!!
hello
i have noticed that the @ sign and the " sign are in the wrong places of my key pad. Therefore to get the @ sign i have to press the shift with the ' key and to get the " sign I have to press the shift key with the number 2 key.Has someone had simillar issues with their key board and tell me how to resolve this problem. Changing the Langauge from UK Enlglish to USA English or vice versa did not make any differance.
thank you.

Oh, an eBay purchase?
That says a lot but I would suspect that a script or something is on the machine for the previous user and is still in effect. It may also be on the image they used to install the OS, not sure at this point, but if you have installation disks I would go ahead and wipe the drive and start anew. Once you have a clean install you should not have the error anymore. If you do, then you might begin to suspect a bad keyboard.

Well i bought it on ebay from a person who won the computer through a Dell competition.When he sent it to me he had deleated everything on the hard disc and i reinstalled every programme again.So the disc is clean.My understanding is that they had fixed wrongly printed keys. I think what i need to do is find the two keys which are corectly printed and replace them with the exsisting ones.
ie kay 2 with " sign and key ' with @ sign

I would love to see a picture of your keyboard.
The @ sign should follow this numeric sequence;
The first two shift + number are "!" & "@" followed by "#" & "$" on 3 & 4.
The quotation key is left of the enter key as shift + "'" (single quote)
If the keys are different than this then the person replaced the keys with a different output. This is a standard legacy pattern for general US keyboards.
If the keys are like this and it still does this then the keyboard is bad, the keyboard's machine code is corrupted or was corrupted when it was imprinted on the internal chip so the key strokes are logged incorrectly. You can test this using dells Fn + power button to enable the hardware diagnostic function, but it is a single key output not multiple key outputs. Also, boot to DOS (not an open DOS box after you boot into windows) if you can and check the outputs there to see if it is still in the software once you get a blinking cursor.

It is in the control panel (start menu > control panel > ) and is an icon labeled "Regional and Language Options"
That will enable you to use the keyboard and font selections of any language and culture.
Inside of that there should be a tab labeled "Keyboards and Languages," there you can change the keyboard layout.

Hi kalinga,
So this was just a problem of not having the US English selected for the keyboard and it is all fixed now? Sure glad you got it solved.
