Impact of running the CPU at 100%

Hi guys....I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 P4 3.06 Ghz processor. I run a distributed computing software called UD, which does cancer research. UD utilizes spare CPU cycles meaning that my system always runs @ 100%. I want to know the longterm effects of 100% usage....like what happens to the fans, which are constantly running. (I got used to the noise....)

Any hints to avoid overheating?

P.S: I run mine 24/7.

Thanx in advance....

Make sure you clean your heatsink often to avoid dust issues. Running the fans 24/7 though WILL cause them to wear out faster. Personally, I wouldn't run such software on a fragile, heat prone laptop like the 5150.

I'd monitor temperatures closely with I8kfangui.

Running any notebook 24/7 is not a good idea, in my option, and running the CPU at 100% 24/7 is going to kill that hot notebook in a short time, my option. Expect to replace the fans often.

Heat is the number one killer of notebooks.

Most distributed computing software is really built to run on desktop machines, where you have adequate cooling and power.  If you're really into it (and many people are), you should either get a cheap desktop system or build one yourself.  I would imagine that you'd save more money in the long run doing that than replacing parts in your laptop.  Not too many labtops are designed to run week after week at full bore, even if they're so-call desktop replacements.
