I have to take out AC in order to turn on XPS 15 (9530, Late 2013)

For a few weeks now I am experiencing issues when trying to turn on my computer.

In order to turn it on I have to take out each time the AC cable off and put it back on before turning on the computer. When I do this, the computer starts normally : the power button turns on, the keyboard also turns on and then the computer boots normally.

If I don't do this operation, then the power button will light up, and stay on for about 3-4 seconds and then turn back off. In this case the keyboard doesn't turn on.

If I start the computer while I'm only on the battery, it starts normally as well.

The battery is functioning normally and also while the AC power source functions without any problems once the computer is running.

Any ideas to what this behaviour could be linked to ?

Hi,

Thank you for reaching us.

Can you check the light on the charger when its not plugged in, It must be lit, Try connecting it to the unit when the laptop is ON .

If the AC Adapter light goes off, Then it is likely that the battery is shorting the AC adapter.

Remove the battery, Plug the AC adapter directly and try using the PC. See if that makes a difference.

Also You mentioned AC power source functions without any problems once the computer is running, It would help us if you could get into BIOS by tapping F2 key while restarting the laptop .

Check for the option "AC Adapter Type" and what it says to its right.

Let us know after trying the above steps, We shall see what needs to be done to get this issue sorted at the earliest.

Thank you

If the AC Adapter light goes off, Then it is likely that the battery is shorting the AC adapter.

When I plug out from electricity the AC adapter, the LEDs on the side of the jack of the AC adapter start to fade and after about 30 seconds they turn off.
When I plug in into an electrical source the AC Adapter, the LEDs on the side of the jack are on and they stay on when plugging the AC adapter into the computer.

When the charger is not plugged in, the 5 LEDs on the side of the computer are all off.  As soon as I plug in the AC adapter (when the computer is turned on or off and the AC adapter is plugged
within an electrical plug) the LEDs get ligthted.

Remove the battery, Plug the AC adapter directly and try using the PC. See if that makes a difference.

The model of Dell XPS 15 that I have, has the battery built in and since it is still in warranty (I bought it 6 months ago) I would rather avoid to dissasemble it.

Check for the option "AC Adapter Type" and what it says to its right.

AC Adapter type : 130W

Model : Dell XPS 15 9530

Service tag : 6MQFN12

Keyboard type : Backlite

Adapter warnings : enabled

Battery health : This battery is performing normally

I don't know if this is relevant : I have two operating systems (windows 8 and ubuntu 15.04) on my computer and use grub boot loader to schoose which of them to start. I've also tried booting with uefi OS boot option, but I had the same problem (the computer was starting only with the AC cable taken out from the computer).

Today it seems that the turning on problem is getting worse. If before I could turn on the computer only while it was on battery (with the AC adapter out) or after taking out and putting the AC adapter plug it back in, today this seems not to do anymore the trick. I had to try different combinations, and after about 2 minutes of trying the computer turned on (while it was only on battery).
The same behaviour happens now as the one I've described in the initial post : when pressing the button for turning on the computer, the LED behind this button turns on, the cooler starts working, but after a few seconds the computer turns off. The computer turns on only when it gets passed the phase when the LEDs behind the keyboard get lighted.

Can you describe me what are the next steps (I have already a backup of my data) to have the computer repaired by Dell (since the computer is still in warranty) because eventually the computer will stop turning on ?
