how to run smaller CD/DVDs on XPS M1330

Since the DVD drive in XPS M1330 is a slot drive instead of a tray drive, there's no way that I can place smaller CDs into the tray and then insert it inside. But the small driver software CDs which come with most of  the electronic gadgets now are not being taken inside by the machine (when I place it almost fully inside the slot). I keep just about 3-4mm portion out of the slot to be able to pull it out. I fear that if I push it inside, it may get stuck up inside the drive and may not be thrown out by the machine. Pl tell me how to play the smaller diameter CDs on XPS M1330.

I'm almost certain that there's no slot loading drive that can accept mini cds/dvds. So, unless I am mistaken, the only option is to get yourself an external drive and connect it via USB.

You cannot put a miniCd in the slot as it will jam the mechanism requiring replacement.

You can copy the contents using another computer onto a full size CD or copy to a flash drive or again to a SD card. So you see you do have options.

For what it is worth Apple recently patened a minicd holder that will work with a slot drive.   Reminds me of those old 45rpm adaptors that allowed you to play them on a 33 rpm player only this is a regular size CD that you can snap a minicd into.  I don't think there is an actual product though at this time.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. Going thru the responses, it appears I'll never be able to use mini CDs and DVDs with my machine. But isn't it strange that Dell, a renowned company, did not think about this aspect? and handed over a product which was not compatible with the existing set-up (forget about a futuristic outlook!). The situation is like - making arrangements for 5¼-inch floppy drive when 3½-inch drives are already a rage.

Can I expect a response from Dell on resolving this.

It's a limitation of the drive, not Dell. Copy the stuff over to a normal disc, a usb stick, a memory card, or send it over a network to your notebook's HD. The whole point is that you need either a drive with a spindle tray that you pop the mini-CD/DVD onto, or one that has a tray with a smaller radius indentation that the mini-CD/DVD rests in so that the spindle is still aligned when it retracts. Slot drives have neither. And if you were to replace the slot drive in the m1330 with a tray drive, you'd have to increase the height of the notebook's base to avoid a weak frame.

Also, the only arrangement the old formats had was to include two different drives on the same PC. A little different than supporting a CD/DVD size reserved mostly for the ad/catalog junk companies send you in the mail or at a convention...
