DIY Help Needed - XPS M140 HDD Upgrade from Hitachi to WD

Hello,

I have begun undertaking the task to upgrade the Hitachi HDD to a WD 250GB PATA HDD in my XPS M140 w/Windows XP, and I'm seeing that I need to make sure I have a lot of different updates or I may run into a few problems here is where I am so far.

1) Ordered HDD Data Migration Cable/Jumper/Power Pack from eBay for $8

2) Purchased WD 250GB PATA HDD from Best Buy

3) Downloaded Acronis True Image to clone the info from the Hitachi HDD to the WD HDD

4) Cloned Hitachi HDD to WD HDD perfectly with Partition, but lost 200 GB of HDD space after the process was completed.

5) Wiped WD HDD clean with Acronis (To start from scratch once problem is identified)

6) Verified I have Windows Service Pack 3

7) Going to download Intel's Accelerator Application Software

This is supposed to allow my system see a HDD with more than 137GB. If anyone has any more information it would be much appreciated!

Because of the presence of a Media Direct partition on the drive, you cannot clone it in its entirety.  You must omit the master boot record and Media Direct  partition from the cloning - you can clone the rest of the drive, and do a manual install of a boot sector (you'll  need your Windows CD to do this).

Thanks for the info EJN63...

I actually took the 250GB back and exchanged it for a WD 320GB PATA HDD, and will start from scratch hoping I will be ready to go before the weekend.

So to prep this new HDD I would have to do a "manual" clone on the Acronis software?

Yes, but DO NOT clone the Media Direct partition or the master boot record.  Since the result will be a disc with no boot record, you will have to boot your Windows CD thereafter into Repair mode and do a fixboot and fixmbr.

All right... I love all the input you have given me! I am ready to tackle this so I can get my laptop's life back on track... I went into Dell Support and uploaded all the drivers and updates for my laptop and installed them including the BIOS. I didn't grab the Windows Boot Software  because I wanted to make sure I was headed in the right direction.

1)  I connected the new 320GB HDD, and ran a Check Disk to make sure it was being recognized, and it was as Disk 2 with 298.09GB.

 2) Open Acronis True Image to clone disk.

3) View Welcome Screen, and select Manual Clone Mode.

4) Select the Source HDD (Hitachi 60 GB).

5) Select the Destination HDD (WD 320 GB)

6) Select Manual Moving Method

This is where I have left off... From reading the info you provided me, I want to only clone the Partitions in-between the first and last

Yes, and you will also see a "copy master boot record" option just ahead.  DO NOT choose that.

When you're done, the resulting disc WILL NOT boot.  You must boot the system from your XP CD (must be the same version as is currently installed).  Then go to a repair prompt and do a fixmbr followed by a fixboot.  The disc should then boot.

So after downloading a ton of updates from Dell I'm back to tackling my HDD upgrade. I'm putting Windows 7 in so I'm not to worried about having the Windows XP Boot Disk. Here is my "Manual Relayout" screen, and below is the "Partition Selection" screen. If I am installing Windows 7 should I still have to worry about removing the partitions?

The 219.6 MB is the first partition and the partition I am not supposed to clone correct?

You can clone the first partition (the Dell diagnostics).  It doesn't look like you have Media Direct loaded - so you should be safe.
