Device Manager: Other Devices: PCI Simple Comunications Controller

DELL Notebook Latidude D810  Windows XP, SP2

I just reinstalled all my software onto a new hard drive. There is nothing else to install. The only thing lacking is that I am not yet ready to hook up to my ISP, so was not online. I don't know if I was supposed to be. The instructions for setup said it was not necessary to connect to the internet until later.

Device Manager has a yellow Question mark for
Other Devices: PCI Simple Comunications Controller.
Its location is PCI bus 3, device 1, function 5
The driver for the device is not installed (code 28)
To reinstall the driver for this device, click Reinstall Driver

There is also on the Device Manager List:
Generic Cardbus Controller at
PCI bus 3, device 1, function 0
Driver file: c:\Windows\system32\Drivers\pcmcia.sys    5.1.2600.2180

The Broadcom network adapter is at PCI bus 2, device 0, function 0.

The Intel Pro Wireless 2200 GB network adapter is at
PCI Bus 3, device 3, function 0

What do I do about the yellow question mark?  Do I have to delete anything before I re-do something?
Please advise, and keep it simple, please. Thanks.

sounds like you're missing the smart card driver.
Download and install the Texas Instruments PCI6515 Cardbus driver

On the drivers page it'll be listed under Chipset.

When you identified what kind of a driver it was (smart card), I went back to my notes and to the installation procedures. I was having a time getting used to the touch pad, some times you need to tap once, sometimes twice, and I think I stumbled over that driver. My notes have a question mark about whether something skipped. Anyway, I have gone back to that place and checked it out. The driver (with subdrivers for flash 2.0.0.1 (flash) 1.0.1.15 (smart card) is there and I installed it.

Now I'm not so sure I should have because close to the end of the installation it said,

"Fixes a customer specific issue where in crypto32  V2 card failed with "Dike" software package."  Well, I don't have a customer issue, but there were no alerts to say, don't do this unless you have an issue. What do you think?

if it was the README file then you might have been looking at a listing of the things fixed in that particular release of the driver.

What I'm getting at is that (Microsoft KBs at least) have some installations and fixes where they say, "Don't install this if you don't have the problem."

I just went and looked at Device Manager. There has been some rearrangement and line up, and right now, the "OTHER" category is gone, and the driver has attached itself to its Texas Instruments device. Thanks for responding. I can get back to work now.
