Dell Xps 15z Battery Replacement?

Is there any place I can go to get either a better battery or have a replacement for the Dell Xps 15z?

October 30th, 2012 22:00

Hi Allan,

Thanks for responding to my post. I started a private conversation with you so if you would like to continue there I can. I didn't leave my service tag number because one of the Dell techs replaced the laptop's lower casing where my service tag was.

I would also like to know why Dell does not offer replacement batteries for the 15z? If batteries are a consumable item Dell should make them available for customers to buy when their batteries reach EOL. This is especially important  for me since I purchased an 3 year extended warranty.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

I have a quick question and this seemed the write thread to post it to.

I have bought an XPS15z in August 2011. My battery stopped charging in December 2011 so I had it replaced on warranty. However the battery has died on me again recently (which is very frustrating since I have not been using the laptop much). It did not even last a year.

So my question is did the new battery come with its own 1 year warranty? Or do I have to pay for another battery now?

Thank you in advance.

Hello Simona,

The warranty for a Dell battery starts from the date of purchase of the computer. Dell battery has a warranty of 1 year irrespective of the system warranty. As you have mentioned that you purchased the computer in August 2011, the original battery was replaced without any charges as it was within 1 year from date of invoice. But the battery that was replaced would hold the warranty of the original battery and would not have its own warranty for another year. Since the warranty of the original battery has expired, you would have to pay for the battery replacement this time.

Seems to be planned obsolescence. A $1200 laptop should not need a new battery this quickly.

I have this system. I purchased it in October 2011 and have just encountered the battery issue. For me, it is over a year. As mentioned above, it is not available to be purchased. I attempted to unscrew the back of the laptop to unplug & replug in the battery, but I cannot get all the screws off. So even if there was a battery for me to purchase, I wouldn't be able to replace it because the screw on the side by the USB drive was put on SO tight that I have stripped it trying to unscrew. To have to replace a battery just over a year seems pretty ridiculous. I do not leave it constantly plugged in either. I take it off the plug regularly and use the battery and recharge it. A previous non-dell laptop of mine lasted for 4 years and I never once had to replace a battery (and I left it plugged it all the time).

What am I supposed to do now?

Hi Abhishek

Just called Dell Parts. They dont have stock of the battery and will not take an order. The Laptop is still on warranty but cannot be used as Dell does not have the parts.

Batteries are not Guaranteed to work more than 1 year whether they are used or not.

Please can you tell me where or how to get a replacement battery for the xps 15z?  It seems to be perpetually out of stock.  When will it be restocked?

Also I have had conflicting replies from Dell representatives as to whether the battery is considered to be a consumer replaceable part..  I understand that the battery has a one year warranty, but my system is under warranty for several more years, so who is responsible for installing the battery (assuming I can find one), me or Dell?

Thank you and Regards,

manoharan

Hi manoharan,

The battery is a field replaceable unit in case of XPS 15z. The availability of parts and service varies from region to region. Please let me know the country you are residing in.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist you.

To Amogh G at Dell,

Thank you for your reply.  I first sent this to you as a private message but then thought I would post it here as well in case other people are interested in where and how to get this battery.

What exactly is a "Field Replaceable Unit?"  Does this mean that if I buy a new battery then a Dell repairman will come out and install it while the system is under warranty?  I live in India.  I don't need a replacement at this moment but my battery is declining and I was just looking around and was alarmed to find out that (seemingly) Dell had no batteries in stock.  I will probably need one in 6 months or so.  Can you tell me where to get one and what is the price?

Thank you and Regards,

Manoharan
