DELL Vostro 3560 Getting heated

I just got my new laptop Dell Vostro 3560

The issues is that bottom center portion is getting heated. suspected some issue with HDD. So installed crystal Disk info and saw hdd temperature getting up to 47 C without any activity on laptop.

Called up dell support they ran a hardware diagnostics and refuse to listen to any issue if diagnostic is not detecting anything.

Don't you have the option to return it within 21 days no-questions asked?

I would take advantage of that if you are not happy with your laptop.

Hi eanupam,

This can be an issue with the system fan as well.

The electrical components in a computer generate heat, and fans inside the computer help move the air to keep the components from getting too hot. Excess heat will cause the fans to run constantly, damage components, and limit the speed of the CPU.

Fans become loud or have abnormal sounds due to:

  • An out of date BIOS.
  • Obstructions in the fan or vent area.
  • Physical Damage.
  • Dust accumulation in the fan or vent area.
  • Using near a heat
  • source or in a hot environment.

Tips to prevent your computer from overheating:

Proper placement:

Locate your computer where the best airflow and least dust contact is allowed.

  • Place your computer a few inches from the wall.
  • Avoid positioning it inside a computer cabinet or directly onto the floor or carpet. It’s better to find a computer stand to elevate the computer several inches off the ground to reduce dust accumulation.
  • Keep the room temperature to a maximum of 75 to 85 degrees (Fahrenheit) and around 35% to 40% humidity level.

Update BIOS:

http://dell.to/Gzt5gi

  • During BIOS update verify that the computer is connected to an AC Adapter.
  • Disconnect any third party peripherals connected to the computer before performing BIOS update.
  • Do not turn off the computer during the BIOS update.
  • Do not restart the computer during the BIOS update.
  • Ensure battery charge is more than 30% during BIOS update.

Note: Plug your computer to a good, working UPS before you update the BIOS. If you experience a loss of AC power or a significant voltage sag/spike during the BIOS flash, you will either have to buy a new BIOS chip or buy a new motherboard.

Check for proper airflow:

Make sure the computer vents and fans remain clean of dust which can prevent the heat and fresh air to pass through efficiently. Additionally, verify that all fans are spinning correctly without unusual noises.

Also, run diagnostics on the computer:

Let me know the status.

Thanks for your reply.

As instructed I did a bootup up diagnosis and ran through full memory test which took me more than 2 hours. During the test laptop was fumingly hot with CPU temperatures reaching 67C and fan constantly running at full speed 4500 to 4600 rpm and emitting hot air.

At the end it showd all test pass, but the laptop was fully HOT. When I opened windows and ran HDD temperature monitoring tools like CrystalDiskInfo, HWiNFO32 etc. I found it showing temperature of 53C. After keeping it on for 2 hours in an air conditioned room for 1 hour temperature claimed down to 49C. and was not going below than this.

Dont know why Hardware diagnosis dose not check for temperature thresholds.

I think something is wrong with the HDD or the system. Please advice me further course of action in this regards or should I initiate a return.

The service person came with new motherboard and heat sink.

He was not aware that it is the HDD that is faulty and HDD is geting heated.

He changed the motherboard and heatsink. but did not know how to do BIOS setting which I had to do myself.

Anyway system is now running with the new motherboard but the problem remains same. the HDD is still getting heated beyond 45C without much activities in an AC room.

Informed Mr. Rjesh, He again asks me to do diagnostics tests and tells "We can replace the hard drive if the diagnostics fails." The reply is same as dell telephonic support.

I checked with forums and different hdd temperature recommendations. "Hard disk temperatures higher than 45°C led to higher failure rates" experts say. A movie playback takes the Temp to 48-49C and diagnostic test it goes beyond 53-54C.  Such High temperature on HDD under air condition environment on a business laptop is just not acceptable.

I am unable to rely  on the laptop for important work.  I doubt HDD can fail any day. My glass table is also getting heated.

I request DELL to replace the laptop or replace the HDD with a reliable slower 1TB 5400RPM drive.

Known issue with this model...  Dell won't help.  Get your money back if you think it's a problem and can't bare to upgrade to an SSD or get a laptop cooler.  I have a Samsung 840 Pro in that spot on my 3560 and it runs all day on a laptop cooler tray at 41 degrees Celsius.  Just the nature of the laptop....  Replacements won't help a thing...
