Dell inspiron stuck at welcome screen
Hello All,
My Dell inspiron (1545 or something, I can't remember the number at the end) laptop - running windows 7 - gave me a BSOD and when restarted giving me an option to either go to a repair mode or start normally. Neither of these options take me past the windows welcome screen.
I tried to repair the OS with the installation CD, still stuck at welcome screen before it could start repair. Tried to re install OS - it still won't start the installation as it can't go past the welcome screen.
I tried the diagnostics tool CD and while testing the SATA disc it gave me a lot off errors saying "Block xxxxxxx cant be read" and gave an error code of 0F00:1344.
How screwed am I?
Will I have to replace the hard disk?
I have lot of important documents in there, is it possible to retrieve it somehow?
Please please help! :(

Hi Pillaisir,
Error Code 0F00:1344 indicates hard drive failure and needs to be replaced.
You may try to connect the hard drive to a different system (As a slave or secondary drive) to see if the hard drive gets detected and if you are able to view the data on the drive.
You may also contact a local store for data retrieval if the hard drive does not get detected.

Hello Kuldeep,
So I am screwed!
I only have another work laptop which I do not want to open and connect my hard disk. I think I will try to buy a SATA to USB adapter and plug into it. Fingers crossed!
How much will it cost me to replace the hard drive (in British pounds)? it is a dell inspiron and it is a 500 GB hard disk. I bought it just over 3 years ago.

I ended up buying a hard drive. So the laptop is up and running now. I still have to find a way to retrieve data from old the drive.

You may backup your data by using a SATA to USB connector to connect the hard drive externally and retrieve the data.

Hello Kuldeep,
I had already tried a SATA to USB adapter and a recovery tool called 'TestDisk' . I was able to copy data from one partition, but I still no luck with the OS partition. I am about to try another tool called 'Recuva'.
Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Sudheesh,
The operating system partition contains the system files for the operating system, drivers and the applications.
The files will be installed on the new drive once you install the operating system, drivers and applications.
If you do not have any other personal data on the operating system partition, it would not be necessary to retrieve data from the OS partition.
