Dell inspiron N5040 not starting up. (7 beep code)
I am having trouble with my Dell inspiron N5040 with an i3 processor laptop. I have only had the system for about 2 or so months and it suddenly stopped working. I have anti virus software so I know its not that. But I am getting a 7 beep code while trying to turn it on (while hooked to the power cord) indicating that the BIOS system may need work. When I tried turning it on the one time it did show me a blue screen saying something about the BIOS system. Now it won't show any picture at all. I was wondering if you had any advice on what to do.

Welcome to the Community. I am sorry to read that you are having this type a problem on such a new system. For quick troubleshooting I suggest removing the AC adapter, battery, SD cards if you have any, wirless card, memory, and the optical drive. These are all devices that you can remove from the system fairly quickly. For more instructions please check out the service manual.
<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>
After this simply plug in the AC adapter and return one stick of memory and start the system and see if you get the beeps. If not switch the piece of memory unto the other socket and test again. Try testing both sticks in both sockets and see if you continue getting the beeps. If there is no difference regardless of where the memory is installed I am going to suggest that you have a service done on the system.
If replacing the memory did help then you can return each of the remaining devices one by one and see if the beeping returns. If it looks like that no matter what you do, if you try to connect one device to the system and the beeps come, then it may be that last device causing the problem. Otherwise if you reconnect everything and the system starts working fine then you may have corrected the issue by reseating the different devices.
If there is no change regardless on what you do please feel free to shoot me a private message. Just click on the link in my signature. Please include your name, the service tag of the notebook, your address, email address and phone number and I will be happy to research service options.
I look foward to receiving your reply.

Hi,
Thanks for your help.
I took it to Bestbuy and they have shipped it out. They say the processor broke.
Hopefully this helps if anyone else has a 7 beep problem!

Hi I'm having a problem with my dell Inspiron N5040 laptop, it won't start up or charge at all..it was fine yesterday morning when I used it but last night I tried turning it on but it wouldn't so I tried charging it because I thought the battery was flat but the moment I inserted the charger, the blue light around the charger went off and the laptop wouldn't charge. It's like it not recognising the charger at all and it still won't turn on at all ....what should I do... I bought the laptop this year in February so it's still pretty much new ...
Yours sincerely Tia

I am having the same problem with the N5040 that I purchased December of 2011. On power up I get the 7 beep code. Contacted support who was happy to tell me that my warranty expired and I have to pay for repairs. Advised them of all of the reports of this on blogs and they told me there is no history with this problem. I currently own 5 Dell computers which will now be replaced systematically with Apples.

There is Definitely a History of the problem. GPU needs reflow. One person fixes with putting bare mobo in oven others use heatgun and cinemadan suggests using a comforter while powering on for 15 min then cooldown then try.
Reason why the case would not go back together.

I purchased the same model for my wife around the same time, now with the same problem. They said the same thing to me. Ended up speaking with a manager who offered to share in the cost (charge half price). This is not acceptable. I too, have several Dells - an XP desktop, Windows 8 desktop, the laptop was a replacement for another dell laptop and my daughter is on her third dell laptop. If this is the quality Dell is not manufacturing and the way they treat loyalty then I will also buy something else.

On the 15R (the entire line as far as I am aware) 7 beeps is always processor. The Dell Support Professional that attempted to assist you should have known that or at least been able to access that information by model if nothing else. I have an Inspiron 15 N5010 That I purchased CHEAP. No POST, No Power. just 7 beeps. I looked up the beep code and had the processor waiting when the unit was delivered! RUNS LIKE A TOP! Hopefully your processor failure was covered under warranty!

I have just spent 1 hour on the phone with the supervisor of the Out of Warranty Department for Canada about this very issue. The 7 beeps means CPU crash test failure and the processor needs replaced.
I spent $50 having the laptop checked by a local computer shop who said the memory and everything else on the laptop is fine, but on my invoice they wrote: "investigated and found there are known issues with the main boards on these computers. Dell may replace the part even with the computer out of warranty".
Unfortunately, our laptop is out of warranty and Dell will charge me to have the processor replaced. My son has learning disabilities and requires this computer as it has programs that he needs for school that we don't have the disks for. I'm incredibly frustrated that Dell will not fix the processor without charge. After the very long and frustrating discussion with the Dell representative, we have decided that we will never purchase another Dell product. I will not be having the laptop fixed as I refuse to pay for repairs for an inferior product. If it was to be fixed and overheated again and damaged the processor, they will only provide a 90 day warranty for the replacement processor.
I will now have to purchase another laptop for my son and try and obtain the programs that he needs through the school board. However, all of his voice files are lost and he will have to spend hours retraining the new programs which will cause him much frustration.
Dell does not stand behind its product in this case. Their product is faulty and they will not correct the problem unless your system is covered by warranty or you have to pay to have it fixed.
Please share this with as many people as you can and complain to Dell so that it is documented and so that they will eventually recognize that this should be a recall for this model.
