Choosing a Computer for video editing

I am trying to narrow down my choice for a new laptop to use for video editing. I have been looking at the Inspiron 8600 in the 1.6 - 1.7 pentium m range. Would I be better off getting a 5150 with a HT chip? Of course now if you go down to the 5150 you loose the wide screen that I would definifly like to have. I would like to get the WUXGA screen but with cost a factor would I be hurting my efficiency and video quality by getting the WSXGA screen. I am pretty much all set on the other hardware components except these, so if anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advane

what software are you going to use to edit video? If it's Adobe Premiere, especially Adobe Premiere Pro. or if you have Adobe Premiere and plan on upgrading, or if it's another video editing software that uses real time rendering, then you will be better of with the 5150 with the H.T proc. because real time programs take advantage of it. If you just plan to edit small home videos on something like Ulead Video Studio or Pinnacle Studio, then go with whichever one you like, because the P-M 1.6 GHz to 1.7 GHz will be good for this type work as well as the H.T procs.

I'd go for 8600 since its wide screen. Also go for the 7200 hard drive.

First he has to say what he's using to edit video, if it's the more advanced ones with real-time then no, he should go with a H.T laptop. If it's one of the "home video" editors then he could go with either one, I suggest the I8600 for the "home video" editing.

The choice of video editing software is still up in the air. Premiere would be good but I've tried it and found it cumbersome. I have also tried Vegas 4 and found it much more appealing. The primary use of this laptop would be for amatuer/business use in video and photo editng. The photo editing will be done with Photoshop. I was thinking of building a video editing specific desktop but felt that I could use my current 8200 1.8mhz for any heavy duty work and then use the laptop for times when I was away from the desk to fine tune projects and do some rendering. I really need a 2nd computer that would be able to be tied up with rendering and felt a laptop would be perfect because it could serve more of my overall needs, mainly be that it is portable. Thanks
